Quoted: I had no idea he voiced the Joker. Go show a picture of Mark Hamill to 100 people. My guess is you get 90%+ Luke Skywalker. Especially people who saw the OT as children which puts them in their 40-50's today. To that generation Mark Hamill is Luke Skywalker. JJ Abrahms could of had Jar Jar Binks rape Han Solo to death and I don't think Harrison Ford would of gave a single fuck but I think this whole thing hits much closer to home with Hamill. I don't get the whole tracking the fleet thing like it's new. The Empire tracked the Falcon when it escaped from DS1. It was a specific plot point when Vader and Tarkin mention it as better working or it was Vader's ass. Obi-Wan places a tracker on Slave 1 to track it to Geonosis in AOTC. The Empire even tried tracking the Falcon in ESB when they thought it went to hyperspace and instead hooked to the back of the Star Destroyer (and nobody heard it clamp on or looked out a porhole on a neighboring ship and said "hey, that's not supposed to be there. Well.... the new canon is just as fun to dissect as the old one. In the new canon, the Resistance is still the bad guys and a bunch of terrorists. After Return of the Jedi and the Battle of Jakku; the Galactic Empire signs a peace treaty with the New Republic. Imperial forces flee to their small territorial holdings in the galactic North on the Outer Rim. They seal themselves off and explore new territories in the Unknown Regions expanding their holdings. During this time. Both the Galactic Empire and New Republic are in a quasi Cold War. But no shots are fired and peace reigns through the Galaxy. During this time of peace the New Republic Senate is made up of two rival factions. Centralists and Populists. The Centralists are made up of mostly former Imperial worlds that favored a strong centralized galaxy-wide government. The Populists are Neo libertarian socialist that favor demilitarization and open borders. Leia is the leader of that camp. The Centralists leave the New Republic and join the Empire. The Populists are happy. They left and demilitarize. During a political debate it becomes known that Leia Organa is the daughter of Darth Vader. She is expelled from the Senate and she forms the Resistance. They operate wholly in Imperial space and are secretly funded by a faction within the New Republic. So you have an organized Terror cell operating in Sovereign Imperial space wreaking havoc on Imperial worlds and targeting Imperial military facilities. They are being secretly funded by certain factions of a rival government. Gee.... who is the bad guy now? Space ANTIFA for sure. |

I'd still say the Last Jedi was pretty good for a movie that solely exists to sell dolls and other children's toys.

Quoted: Print media answered your questions. From what I understand, Leia didn't believe that the remnant of the Empire will co-exist with the New Republic. The New Republic naively believed that the remnant wouldn't become belligerent. So, the New Republic reduced its forces by 90% because the war was over. It was basically Mon Mothma's fault for crippling the New Republic forces. Leia formed the Resistance to monitor the remnant aka the First Order for possibly aggression by them. She got funding for her force because some smart people believed that the First Order can't be trusted. After Starkiller destroyed the Hosnian system, the New Republic military basically ceased to exist because the fleet was stationed in the system. So, there isn't a real military force to check the First Order's offensive. View Quote |

I'm going give a spoiler warning here, but if you're dumb enough to read a 20 page thread about a movie and not expect spoilers that's not my fault. *********** Quoted: Absolutely. Even on the casino planet--there was zero First Order presence. The Empire was everywhere. The Republic was almost everywhere. The Clone Wars were everywhere. And agreed on the EU, too. Rogue One captured the fear and desperation and pervasiveness of the Empire. These movies are failing at making me care about the Resistance. What is happening in the Core, the Rim, Coruscant? Does the rest of the galaxy care? If not, why should I? View Quote At the end of ROTJ the universe is in a pretty good spot, the movies offer very little explanation on how shit got to the point it's at in Ep7. Thanks to this thread I see there is some explanations in the new novels but I'm not the type to check out much beyond the films, and neither are the majority of SW fans. In the past the movies did a good enough job explaining things that you didn't NEED to read the books or play the games to make sense of it. The books and games just helped flesh out the universe. I see a lot of people are pissed about the casino "side quest" and at the same time are pissed about not developing characters. That's character development, but "space horses" so fuck that. You're also missing how it all tied together. At the end when the resistance is in their base and they send their distress signal they say "no one is responding" and it's mentioned elsewhere that they need to "spark" the people into fighting the FO. That's what the whole Canto Bight part was about. The slave boy at the end using the force to pick up his broom, holding the broom like a light saber, staring into space watching a ship enter hyperspace, and admiring his Resistance ring are all there to show you that Finn and Rose (aka the resistance) are inspiring people. It was also an opportunity to introduce a new place/world (which is a SW theme, and I remember loving it when a new place was introduced in the other films. It just sparked your imagination about the history and where it fits within the universe you already knew.) Poe and Finn (and Rose) coming up with the plan to save the Resistance was part of the character development, and Poe's tendency for action in particular was being contrasted against Leia and Holdo's tendency to "live to fight another day". That was something the movie pushed from the beginning scene where Poe's squadron took out the FO Dreadnaught up until the salt speeder scene on Crait where Poe called off the assault on the big cannon. I think the film was trying to establish that the Resistance wouldn't win by throwing it's members into the meat grinder. This is also why Leia takes control back from Poe when she finds out about the mutiny, and I would assume Holdo's plan. This is also why Rose crashes into Finn before he can kamikaze into the cannon, they're trying to show the audience and the characters that there are other options than suicide missions(which were often what happened in the past films). The Rose character... I honestly figured she was just going to end up as a an expendable character to kill when they go on their side quest. Guess I was wrong, but I shouldn't have been. Nothing about her character is interesting. The DJ character... My first thought when he said could crack the FO codes was that he was the guy they were actually after, and the guy in the casino with the symbol(i forgot what they called it) took it from him somehow. It's possible that the guy in the white coat was just some guy who designed stuff for the FO and could have helped Finn & Rose, but I don't see how Maz would know him. Maz knowing DJ makes more sense. Luke... His death was disappointing. Not that I really cared that he lived or died, but it just seemed weak. I personally would have liked to see him kick some ass, like the Vader scene from RO, and go out in style. I guess that could have been a bit unrealistic though, since he was a whiny bitch in all the other movies as well. Leia... Force flying herself back to the ship(or even if Kylo or Luke did it) just looked cringey. They could have let her die there and I think everybody would understand, considering her death IRL. She was fine for the rest of the movie, but I think we're going to be in for a all CGI Leia in Ep9 and it's going to be weird, just like in RO. Ackbar... Should have survived the bridge explosion and gone down with the ship instead of Holdo. Then they could have kept Holdo around to fill in Leia's spot in Ep9. Holdo... I got the SJW vibe here but it was slight IMO. Her costume was out of place like mentioned, not so much if she was just some civilian on a random planet, but as a admiral in the Resistance. Not discussing her plan with Poe gave the SJW vibe, not so much because it was an unrealistic premise but because of the dialogue. Rey & Ren... I like the "Darth Emo" name for Ren. They really should have done a better job at making him a badass, because at this point I don't think anybody considers him a real threat like Vader or Maul. Especially when in TFA some random junker girl with a lightsaber kicks his ass. I like Rey as a character, I think they just did a horrible job of giving her force abilities with no training. That was just lazy writing, you have to assume she has so much raw power/talent that she can do things without training and then you have to ignore that she was unaware of it all until 7 started. It contradicts what we've seen in Ep1, and even at the end of Ep8. Overall I really enjoyed the movie, and I found myself grinning like a idiot seeing all the familiar stuff from the original three movies. It wasn't without it's faults but what do you expect? |

· X-wings, A-Wings · Humour was an acceptable level. Was really worried that the characters wouldn’t seem like themselves, but it actually worked out ok and didn’t distract me that much. Then again, I probably ate crayons as a kid so I’m easily amused. · Some touching moments (don’t remember exactly which ones at the moment), pretty sure I saw people in theatres getting out napkins to wipe away tears….oh, wait, Leia’s hologram from ANH was a nice touch. · Puppet Ghost Force Yoda…..50/50 on this one. I liked he came back, but wished he wasn’t based off the puppet from Empire and Jedi, but just an older version of ROTS. As much as I hated Haydensen, it would have been cool to see Luke talk to his dad in this, or at least hear from ex-Vader. · Nice touch with Rey mirroring Luke’s words from Jedi on the way to see the Emperor · Despite some gripes about Snoke’s demise, I did like that scene where Kylo came around and turned on him. The following fight scene was enjoyable as well. Glad there wasn’t a significant amount of Wushu style lightsaber combat. I studied Wushu for about 15 years and I’ve got nothing against it, but was really irked by the overly flashy style change in lightsaber combat. Regarding Luke’s fighting style, see below in things I didn’t like. Things I didn’t like: · Even though the new bombers probably carry more payload, I wish they brought the Y-Wings back….I know, these were already outdated by ANH · Didn’t like the whole tracking thing? What exactly were they resisting? It sure appeared like New Republic had a handle on things and the First Order was hardly a visible threat until they blew them up with Starkiller. · Admiral Ackbar won’t be Admiral Obvious anymore. · Vice Admiral Holdo….pretty sure her uniform and haircut don’t conform to the grooming standard. Okay, she got crap done, but doing it in an evening gown was a little retarded. I get it, “muh vahginuh” feminism, but seriously, WTF. · First Han, now Luke……...get rid of C3PO maybe, but should have left Luke and Han around until at least Rian’s new standalone series comes around. · I mentioned I studied Wushu for 15 years, well, after I stopped, I picked up Iaido and have been doing it for the last 12 years, so I noticed some pretty minor things……Luke used to hold his lightsaber like a katana, with his right hand above his left. I guess it is possible Luke became ambidextrous in over the years, but in all honesty, I think it’s just Mark Hamill forgetting what he did in the original films. · Anikin’s lightsaber was broken in half by his squabbling grandkids. I know, Rey isn’t his grandkid, but there were moments when I thought they were really close to going to go that way. Anyway, hope it gets fixed because it seemed to hold a lot of symbology , like Narsil or Excalibur, but sadly, I have my doubts it will appear again. · Didn’t like the Crate skimmer things. Would have been cool to see some beat up Snow Speeders, but I know, no snow, and folks probably wouldn’t want to see that either and would prefer something new and interesting. Things that left me hanging: · Kylo faltering between the light and the dark, and tells Ray that he things they should let both sides die, but is essentially still dark. · Leia getting blown into space….thought that’s where they would write her character out (RIP Carrie Fisher), but they brought her back and left her in for us to wonder what the hell are they going to do about her in the next film…..meanwhile, Mark Hamill is alive and well, but either out or coming back as a Force Ghost. So, what’s going to happen to Leia? · Were those the Jedi books in the Falcon near the end? · So…..who the fuk is Snoke???
