Apparently during development of the Raptor rocket engine SpaceX discovered a new super-strong cryoformed Stainless steel type alloy that allowed them to skip building it out of composites and accelerate development.

They are now building the grasshopper-type upper stage test article in Texas:



Starship/BFR will be the largest, most powerful rocket ever built

BFR/Starship flying before SLS would the ultimate slap in the face to oldspace considering SpaceX was just an overgrown hobby rocket company when Ares/SLS started development.

Pretty sure you mean inconel - they had announced development of a new superalloy in the inconel family earlier this year, IIRC. (Inconel alloys aren't anything like stainless steel, BTW. They aren't even steel - they are Ni-Cr based.)

That comment doesn't sound like anything actually new, as in completely novel - just different from the construction of the old Atlas.

As I said, they did announce development of a new inconel superalloy, but I hadn't heard about any new revolutionary stainless formulation.

They're building a test article for the upper stage similar to the grasshopper they built to test booster landing equipment for the Falcon rocket

They did make an SX500 inconel alloy for Raptor, so now America will finally have liquid fueled rocket engines that can beat the Russians. (current record holder for chamber pressure is the RD-170/180/190 series engines at 260 bar, Raptor will go to 300+ bar.)

Super heavy rocket designed for heavy lift economy. It was designed to be launched partially submerged vertical. The saturn V second stage would fit in the nozzle.

Sea Dragon is cool, but BFR/Starship will easily beat it on economics because it is fully re-usable. Fuel is cheap, aerospace equipment is expensive (EDIT: fucking ARFcom keeps auto deleting what I try to write here)

With BFR/Starship you should be capable of >100 tonnes to orbit for <$10 million.

Inconel is very tough to machine.  Especially when TIG welded and you're cleaning up the weld with interrupted cut on a lathe

The SpaceX BFR/Starship was designed from the outset to be a system to deliver stuff to space for the lowest possible cost. It's look has changed a bit since the video above but the concept still works the same.

-Fully re-usable
-Also uses cheapest fuel source (Methane i.e. NG) that can also be sourced from other planets/moons
-Can re-fuel itself in orbit to go beyond LEO
-Booster lands right back on launch pad to allow for quick operations

Whatever they are doing to make things happen they need to keep it up.  Their stuff works and when they make a mistake they work hard to learn from it and not repeat it.

I mean, what the fuck is NASA actually DOING these days? And why would anyone who is qualified to do this stuff ever want to work for NASA ever again?

Does anyone realistically think that NASA will ever fly any manned missions ever again? Space X will be building weekend condos on Mars while NASA is still driving remote controlled cars around and looking at pebbles.
