Watching "Searching for Secrets: Berlin" on the Smithsonian Channel and it turns out Ernst Rohm, one of, if not The founder of the SA, is a gay hero.

Apparently, being a Gay Nazi was cool, but being a not gay Nazi was BAD.

They don't appear to be picking their heroes very well.

There were quite a few failures in the regime who made it by simply towing the line and being evil.

Rohm was hated because he aspired for the SA to take the place of the Heer as the national army and he had the manpower to do it. I believe it was Goering that convinced Hitler to turn on Rohm in order to retain the support of the General staff he needed for his ambitions of European campaign. Thus the Night of the Long Knives…the upper echelon of the Wehrmacht saw Rohm as an unsophisticated thug with a predilection for buggery.

Rohm ran illegal firearms during the Weimar years for the Freikorps militias and was known as “ The Machine Gun King of Bavaria”. He wasn’t shy about his homosexuality at all and was a socialist as well as a nationalist..

The irony here is that the Nazis knew for over a decade about Rohm and his buddies and the parties they had. That said prior to Hitler becoming Chancellor they needed the SA to brawl the commies in the streets. Once in power they used the fact that the SA was mostly run by gays at the top and used this to smear Rohm and his cronies in the press after they killed them all. By that point the SS was growing and the SA had largely outlived its usefulness.

I seem to recall he was close, suspiciously so, with Himmler. As in best buds. I've long suspected Himmler was in the closet despite his family, or at least swung both ways, and some of the SS rituals that originated with him seemed to imply it as well. I'd have to go back and do some serious digging to get the specifics, but if you watch some of the more detailed documentaries on the SS, you start to see the pattern.

Hitler needed the muscle of the SA in the early years. They were a much bigger, stronger version of Antifa. When their man finally rose to power, they wanted more money, arms, influence, etc. The Generals basically gave Hitler an ultimatum, the SA or us. Hitler knew Rohm and his mob had outlived their usefulness and were now a threat.
