Just finished a couple books by Adm McRaven on leadership. They're quick reads with nice little stories. Read "A Shau Valor" by Tom Yarborough and it is was excellent. Tied together a lot of different battles and actions around the A Shau Valley during the Vietnam War. By the end you realize the American strategy was fundamentally flawed - there were numerous battles eventually won by American forces in the valley to take high ground but they turned over the positions after a few weeks. The NVA cheerfully took back the positions and waited for the next American attack while improving their positions and bringing more soldiers, supplies and equipment into the valley. That book prompted me to start reading "Ripcord" by Keith Nolan. It is a great look into the 101st Airborne and the US Army in general. It also reminded me how talented Nolan was as a writer. |

Reading The Wreck of the River of Stars by Michael Flynn. Surprisingly interesting character drama set on a crippled spacecraft. The title kind of gives it away but getting there is very good. |

Over the last few months it's been all audio books for me. The previously mentioned "Two Years Before the Mast"- Excellent Conquistador about Cortez and the Aztecs- Excellent River of Doubt, Roosevelt's journey in the Amazon- Excellent River of Darkness, about Francisco Orellana's journey down the Amazon- Excellent A Land so Strange, The journey of Cabeza de Vaca. Very good I'm currently listening to Into Africa about the adventures of Stanley and Livingstone. So far it's just ok. I'm not very far into it though. |

Finished (finally) The Wreck of the River of Stars. Really enjoyed the writing, but not the story, if that makes sense. Very human characters. But as an engineer the depiction of the continued spiral downwards due to bad decisions and poor leadership was just painful. Reading TJIC's Red State Mars. Very strong start. I just finished "The Worlds Deadliest Units" by Jack Judge. It follows how to build the most deadly special soldiers from the Spartan's to the current Army and Navy Special Ops units and how they fail when things change. He explains how the Spartan's, Roman legions, Genghis Khan hordes, the Janissaries, and Napoleon's Elite, led directly to the SAS, Delta and SEAL 6. The times and civilizations change, but how to build the men stays pretty much the same. As the author puts it, make a young man part of an elite unit and able to ignore pain, lack of sleep, and hunger, and he'll always hold the pass....until he doesn't. |
