Came across this recent photo of the Taliban placing IEDs as they steamroll through the ANA(who had 157 casualties in the past 24 hours) and noticed the footwear.
  While researching for the uncommon guns in the middle east thread I had previously come across a photo from a Taliban propaganda video where everyone was wearing sweet kicks as well.  Turns out, it's apparently the preferred footwear of the SW Asian mountain fighting man. Goes back as far as the Mujahedeen. The local Taliturds wore sneakers or sandals. The foreign volunteer fighters tended to have nice hiking or combat boots.

Roughly two years ago, a high-ranking Taliban commander recalled preparing for an operation against the Islamic State’s affiliate in the country that was entrenched in Kunar Province. The commander said the battle would be difficult and he wanted his men to “fight comfortably,” so he dispatched taxi drivers to buy 200 pairs of Cheetahs in Jalalabad, a bustling city in the east. |
