Who knows why silver dollars contain more silver than the .715 oz/dollar face value of smaller coins (dimes, quarters, halves)?
Silver dollars are .773 oz silver content.

The coinage act of 1873 specified how much silver was required to be in the dollar. This was mainly for international trade purposes. By creating subsidiary silver coins, the Treasury effectively ensured they would circulate and not be hoarded and potentially melted and exported.
