If you don't know this guy wrote a 2968 page narrative of the US Civil War. I started reading the first of the three books and am blown away with how good this book is so far. I highly recommend it.

WE aren't allowed to read Civil War books anymore. They have been canceled.

Great interview
Civil War author, Shelby Foote - Stars in Their Courses - The Gettysburg Campaign - 1994 Interview |

Op is not wrong, have them all. Been needing something to read, they’re worth reading again.
I read them years ago, still have them. Great books. Shelby Foote is a master

I read them 30yrs ago.
If you like that stuff you should read Embattled Courage. Not a very well known book, but its a great read. https://www.amazon.com/Embattled-Courage-Experience-Combat-American/dp/0029197619 |

Regret not going and seeing him at the Southern Writers Convention when it was here. He made the Ken Burns documentary great. I have his book Shiloh. It is excellent. The Hornets Nest must have been insane.

It’s a good series,
I read Book I in 2022, will read Book II and Book III in 2023 as time allows. I had trouble keeping up with the Johnson’s and Johnston’s. Popular name in those days on both sides. |
Not only is he a great historian, he’s got the greatest voice and accent ever. In saying somebody was continually bothering him, Foote remarked he was being “hair-assed.”

The Civil War - Was It Not as in the Old Days? The narrative he recites at the end brings a tear to my eye. |
I wish that he had narrated an audio version the entire set. He had a great voice for narration.
I was first exposed to him in the PBS Civil War series.
I read a few of his books, he was a national treasure in my opinion. |
I've read the first two books and on the third one.
It is amazing to learn so much about the civil war, he cover's battle tactics, letters from the generals, the president, how everyone thought about the war and so so much more. The part that is the most disturbing is the battles he describes and how many times the same battle was fought, and it's frustrating to hear how the war was waged on both sides. |

I have read it , and listened to the audiobook while commuting.
Mandatory reading in my household. |

Foote was a nice guy. 50 years ago he and his family lived across the street from us. This was before he was famous it was very Blue Collar neighborhood in North Memphis.
Man, he could not exist in today's environment. In fact, I bet the PBS Civil War, as it was presented originally, would not be allowed in today's environment without significant censoring and rewriting. Probably by Ken Burns his own woke self.

If you like videos the "American Civil War Trust" did a series of walking tours with General Parker Hills of Battle Focus Tours and Dr. Chris Mackowski of Emerging Civil War. This is one of my favorites of that series it is tour stop 10 Shiloh.
Tour Stop 10: Shiloh: Early Confederate Attack and Mass Confederate Burial Trench |

Quoted: Great interview, thanks for posting...... View Quote I have no real interest in CW writings, but i figure Foote's stuff is good. It was neat to see Brian Lamb doing an interview. I've been away from cable/sat so long that I'd actually forgotten him. Always admired the guy and wondered how he kept his job at C-Span. The "Jane Fonda-marrying, CNN-owning communist", Ted Turner, signed Lamb's paychecks. Lamb was (still is, maybe?) a truly evenhanded interviewer. How Turner tolerated that still puzzles me. I'm betting it was his ratings. |

Couldn't find it with a search but the bit when he meets Forrest's grandaughter and tells her her grandfather and Lincoln were the 2 great figures produced by the war was great
I liked him a lot in the ken burns serie
yank : ‘why are you fighting Johnny Reb ?’ Reb: ‘cause you’re down here !’ best CW sum up ever |

I love hearing that guy talk about the civil war. He had a perfect voice for it. I need to read those books.

Great books.
Everyone should read his books and Bruce Catton trilogy for a Southern and Northern perspective on the war. They are both good historians and very fair narrators. But there's a subtle shading that make them excellent companions. |
Not to be weird, but I could listen to that dude talk for hours about the weather.

I think a lot of people would be actually shocked by how interesting the fighting aspects of the Civil War really were. Its astounding how many battles some of these generals fought in.

I could listen to the soundtrack to Ken Burn’s Civil War all day long.
I couldn't read it and I have over 36 shelves filled with Civil War books. I like journalist Bruce Catton's trilogies (Army of the Potomac, U. S. Grant) more better. Haven't read his third trilogy.
