I can imagine how hard it was to mix that stuff in.
I've seen fiberglass added to concrete which I never really bought of on.
I have also seen black ash adder to concrete. What a cluster fuck that was from the Union Laborers

My parents had their driveway done about 20 or so years ago with fiberglass concrete. It laughs at sledge hammers and the loaded dump truck they had parked on it for a bit. Also snapped my arm like a twig when I fell on it. It's tough shit.

I've worked in some very old buildings that drilling holes in the concrete was more like sacrificing masonary bits to the gods.

that company is trying to make it sound like they developed the idea of using sea water to make concrete. Sounds like cultural appropriation to me

Besides the sanitation, the aqueducts, the baths, the really great concrete and nuclear power, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Don't forget roads and public health.

And the wine. We'd miss the wine if the Romans left.

“All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?”

Because of carbonation, Roman concrete would never have lasted if it was reinforced.  The only reason we can't use it here is because much of the US is seismically active and we need lateral (sideways) capacity.

So we are giving up having 200 year concrete by having structures that will need to be maintained, but can withstand lateral loads.

Carbonation is kind of a cool process, eventually it will allow corrosives to 'seep' into the concrete and eventually reach the rebar, and eventually it will rust and expand, spalling the concrete off.

@SCW, you seem knowledgeable about it.

Would any of the self-healing/polymer/gas-block-type additives you can put in concrete reduce or eliminate carbonation?

We need that for concrete here, you can watch the shit crack right after it's poured most of the time. Then you get to hear the old " well, it all does that" What? I didn't buy a Ford. If all concrete does that I'll just have gravel put in instead.

when using volcanic sands in your mortar you need more cement and lime because the sand has so many voids, Kodiak AK, Seward AK and Big Island HI are 3 places I ran into that crap, In Hawaii a normal mix for dry pack would disintegrate if you walked on it. Mixing it just feels lighter.
