If so, yes, two of them.

Still on Google's website for sale. You need an unlocked one for GrapheneOS, not one from your carrier that is locked into carrier-specific bloated bullshit.

It’s also kind of a bitch to get a bunch of people to download a new app and make a new account for functionality they had previously.  WhatsApp was the one I ended up with for some community service groups I’m a part of.  Most people were already using the other Meta products.

I read about this on the interwebs.  Because of this, I decided to stay with Android 13 and also to not upgrade One UI.  I still get frequent nags to update.

Maybe I'm not like the cool kids that always have the latest hardware, software, and spyware.  At least I feel like my phone is mostly working for me rather than me working for my phone.

I have Google messages on a tablet that I don't often use for messaging.  I strongly prefer Samsung messages.  It is better at doing the things I want and not doing the things I don't want.

A search of the interwebz indicates some users have successfully sideloaded Samsung Messages on Android 16, while others have failed.

Sadly, it looks like Google may be the best alternative to the Samsung app.

It's been awhile since I've used Samsung messages, but I seem to recall it had the same limitation as Google messages for a group chat - any change to the group membership essentially creates a new chat, which you have to hope everyone moves to.  And even if they do and that chat takes off, the new person doesn't see any of the earlier messages from the prior chat.  That's why a proprietary protocol, non-SMS based messaging app is usually better for group chats, and that's essentially what iMessage is, but it's limited to just iPhones, whereas something like Whatsapp is not.

Doesn't RCS handle group messaging far better than MMS?

Yes, but it only works if everyone in the chat is using an RCS client (like Google Messages) and has RCS enabled.

Unfortunately, in any decent size group, there's almost always one who doesn't.  And they are often on an iPhone.  Or a holdout still using Samsung Messages.

Install is darn easy, just use the cable it comes with, Chrome as the browser to do it from, and follow the installer instructions on the GrapheneOS website. It's like five button clicks and done.

Once installed, I'd set it up with Google Play Services if you're transitioning from Android, it gives you access to the Google stuff you are used to. Also don't listen to the "set up multiple profiles on the phone, for secret squirrel reasons" people on YouTube. For most people this will only result in headaches.

If you want to go full Kazenski off-grid maximum tinfoil with GrapheneOS, it lets you. But for most people that is unnecessary and only causes problems. The thing GrapheneOS is actually good at is just being a phone that works, isn't loaded with bloated garbage, and doesn't constantly spy on you.

It's not just the message bubble color.  There is (or at least was) a functional reduction to the chat.

Adding an Android user to an iMessage chat previously forced the swap of the app from an Apple-proprietary messaging protocol to standard SMS/MMS, which reduced some features for the users in that chat.  Some examples include loss of read receipts / typing indicators, reduced quality of media pasted into the chat, and breaking group chats, requiring creation of a new group chat to accommodate the Android user.  And although users likely didn't notice, falling back to SMS/MMS instead of a more modern protocol, like RCS, also broke encryption for the chat.

Of course, iPhone users hated this and would blame the Android user, instead of Apple, for creating a messaging app that used a proprietary protocol that wasn't compatible with 70% of the mobile devices in the world.  And Apple doubled down on this limitation for years, even though creating an Android version of iMessage would have been fairly straightforward.  One might infer they failed to do so to give their users a sense of superiority, or perhaps just to lock them in, for fear of being a green bubble, but whatever the reason, it's clear creating a cross-platform version would have been easy for one of the wealthiest companies in the world.  Whatsapp did it.  So did Signal.  But they chose not to, continuing to imply Android users were to blame.

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.

Apple did eventually agree to at least adopt the open RCS standard for communicating with Android users, after being publicly shamed by Google in a media campaign they ran several years ago.

Here is the funny one, being have older phone that I delete my messages after reading them (including the trash to remove them completely).  So real question, is why is the phone saving the text messages to a cloud drive in the first place, since its not like your every going to scrounge to go take a look at an old message to begin with.

Bottom line, Turn off the master Back up to Google Drive toggle, or tap App data and turn off individual syncing for SMS/text messages if available on your specific Android version.  If you can't them delete the program from the phone, and use another message program that is not going to back your text's up to drive instead.

As for Iphone, the racket with it, its always backing up everything  to the your  apple  cloud account as well, so the free account becomes full and they can charge you more each month for a larger storage accounts, the longer you have the phone.

I was enlightened by a 20something to something I was totally unaware of. He told me that when he was in HS, the snobs would not be caught dead using an Android. Even if they were wannabe wealthy, they'd turn out their little sister to buy a refurb iphone to fit in. Android was considered a stain of the poors.

What he said was considered even lower on the status pole was an Android with a removable battery. He saw a girl cry after dropping her phone and the lid and battery popped off. All the iphoners were laughing at her. How fucked up is that?

It is genius, unofficial status marketing on Apple's part. Leverage young people at an age they are trying their hardest to fit in. It also automatically adds in accelerated decrepitude into their more costly product by using enclosed batteries. I recall my old S2 Galaxy was on its fifth year and second battery when I accidently smashed it.  I'd likely still be using it now.

We were issued new iPad at work. The first week I found Siri, I so pissed it off it will not even pop up now. All it does when I say "Hey Siri" is a low sound prompt and and that short rainbow of faint colors trimming the screen. Who knew an AI could be insulted?

I loathe tablets, even my Android at home. The program architecture on iPad took a long time for me to navigate. The only cool feature I've found on the iPad is the Measuse feature. It is laid out as altered reality on the screen. It is pretty accurate in my tape measure verifications. I've smoked on that, trying to figure out how it is done. It has got to be using a blend of at least two camera sensors, AI, accelerometer, internal compass to do that. Neat doo-dad, but I've never actually used it. I wish they'd just bought a hundred cheap Lenovo  tablets and given us the premium savings as a bonus.

I read this thread and it helps build the overwhelming desire to almost totally unplug. I've spent my adult life in a technical trade. Even took interest in computery in the early internet days. Back before Windows 2000, I was the computer guru in my facility. I remember helping a PhD figuring out why his desktop was suddenly so slow. I smiled when he came back: "Fast as new now." He was tickled pink. I neglected to tell him his cache files were so choked with Asian porn site visits it could only stumble.

I was chatting with our, then,  soon to be retiring chief of IT last year. I said: "You have timed your exit perfectly. This stuff is compounding so expontially that no human will be able to stay ahead of things."  He laughed in agreement and mentioned selling all for a small, primitive island. No phone.

I won't be that severe. I like streaming, but I could easily just dump everything else and carry a flip phone again. I just bought a pristine 1949 Western Elecric dial phone. If I figure out how to get that old girl working for internet calls, that flipper might go in tge garbage, too.

I was a Samsung/Android guy for a long time years ago. I got sick of the flaws and unstable nature of Android. I am sure it is better now than it used to be but whatever. I switched to iPhone.

Here is my analogy-

iPhones are like Glocks. Pretty basic OS, not to flashy, pretty standard stuff but they are built well and run great. It's not the best at anything but does everything very well and reliably.

And I switched to Google Phone from Samsung Phone for the spam and scam call filtering, which is much more effective with Google.  Samsung hardware is ok, but most of their apps are pretty mediocre.

The iMessage encryption was formally verified by third parties and the source code was reviewed by a third party.  It's been post quantum since 2024.

You are trusting words, not code. The list of exploits that have been found, often deliberately placed, in closed source systems from big tech companies is miles long.

If they won't publish the code, it cannot actually be trusted.

iPhones are like Glocks. Pretty basic OS, not to flashy, pretty standard stuff but they are built well and run great. It's not the best at anything but does everything very well and reliably.

Most of the problems and bullshit with Android comes from the custom builds and bolted on bullshit added to the OS by the phone maker. Samsung is awful about this.

The closer it is to bare bones Android/AOSP, the better it will work. That hasn't been an option on Samsung phones for like a decade, their bloatware is mandatory.

This force move to Google messages is not a welcome change, GM is absolute DOGSHIT.

Rant over...maybe.

Even if you aren't interested in joining the GrapheneOS Master Race, a Pixel is one of the best choices today. It doesn't deviate much from AOSP, and some actual effort was put into the things Google added to the OS, so it works well.

Samsung has become like those cheap computers in the 2000's factory loaded with garbage that makes it borderline unusable.

You need to include that they only sell them through Glock owned stores, they only chamber .45 GAP which you can only buy from Glock, as well as accessories.

I seriously didn't know what the OP was talking about.  Didn't realize people used anything other then GM on an Android.

Still using my Samsung Galaxy S9+ phone and Samsung Tab S3 tablet.
I finally got tired of seeing the message that I was almost out of memory on the tablet so I did a hard reset last night.  Since the only things I use the tablet for are reading ebooks, checking emails, and weather that seems to have cured my problem there.
I am bummed that Samsung updated Samsung Health and changed it so you can no longer monitor your pulse with the phone; you need a smart watch / ring / junk trinket now.  No, Samsung, I'm not buying a useless piece of wearable tech just to check my heart rate.  I just uninstalled the app.
