Those were the days, right?

Hurricane, O Show, Bailey, Sun...

I counted down the months/days until the Supercross came to the Kingdome every year.

We were a honda family so every day I would ride and pretend I was riding for team red.

I've been to many races there! Also about half dozen at Ford Field now.

Always a good time!

I remember hitting the convenience store everyday after school when it was about time for the latest editions of the MX mags to hit the shelf. No internet to read about the latest news or bike tests.

I regret trashing my rather large stack of mags years ago.

That was the best time.

Not knocking Super Cross racing now. These dudes can ride.

These dudes were/are rockstars to us.

Yep.  I was like a child on Christmas morning when the newest issue of Dirt Rider showed up on the shelf or in our mailbox.

That clip was WONDERFuL.

I have a lot of things I could say.  But right now I just want to smile for the great race I just watched.

Yes, they were certainly household names back then.

This year's 450 field is stacked.  There are at least 14-15 risers that could win any Main.

It wasn't like that back in the day, but that's one reason why a few had rock star status.

Notice how long that track seemed to be?  Much narrower and less cookie cutter.

Now, with the larger jumps and triple/quad sections, the tracks seem shorter.

I'm going to have to head into the YT time machine and check out some old races.

So many great riders, different styles, tactics, personalities, etc. There weren't really any I didn't like. Somewhat of a fan of them all really. However, if I had to pick a fav, it would be Magoo. RIP.

Dirt Bike was the best magazine ever. Super Hunky & Paul Clipper had pieces in the front, & Mr. Know It All responding to letters mocking people about powerbands, telling them you could buy them from White Brothers. Good times.

Occasionally they would put out a mini rider magazine which for a kid was better than a Sears Wish Book.

Hannah switched to Honda in 83.

Worked for a Yamaha dealer in jr high in the summer and raced - we always waited for cycle news to be delivered on Tuesday AM to see who won over the weekend.

Great times.

Saw all the greats of the late 70s and early 80s except DeCoster in person.  Best time ever to be in your early teens and into motocross

As I was growing up and in highschool, I watched and read these races. Could not wait to go to the Pontiac Silver Dome and watch super cross, also got to see  Hurricane Hanna race the out door series at a local motorcycle club track near were I used to live.

All the guys in that race were MX stars, as there were no SX specialists yet.
My brother and I used to take our kids to the Pontiac Silverdome SX races in the early 90s, good times.

Lulz....

I was at that race in 83' and 84'.

Yes....Race gas, Golden spectro, and Bel-Ray MC1+ is intoxicating. It gets thick in a pressurized dome though.

Weird thing about the old silverdome.
Because the roof was held up by fans creating higher pressure than outside. Carb jetting was a bitch, and just dropping the needle on the main wasn't enough.
Drop two main sizes and raise the needle all the way up, and most were close, but if the weather outside changed they would either bump up or down the inside pressure as needed, and leave ya pig rich or melting a piston.

Everybody HATED the Silverdome. Heck, there was no suspension set up flexible enough at the time, to deal with the goofy dirt they would bring in, and spray down with chloride to keep the dust down. Loose and rutty to blue groove in the same section. Stuff has come a LONG way!

In a way, things were better then. It was all still new, and still outdoor MX inspired tracks, with higher speeds, and less hang time, so the racing was closer even in traffic.

4-Strokes suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
