How much of your performance do you think you can attribute to having gone easy on squats?  When I ramped my weight back up this week, everything else took an immediate dive.

W/O 'B' again today.  Squats went well but I wasn't able to move the weight up.  I may have to slow the progression to 2x or 1x weekly.  I don't know if I'll continue squatting 3x weekly if that's the case.

My presses went alright.  I pushed 4/4/3.  I'll carry the same weight over to next Wednesday.  Rows were outstanding again, although I had a nasty inner-ear thing happen after erecting myself from my first set.  Like a gun had gone off and I wasn't wearing any ear pro.

Probably a lot, it is amazing how the full sets of squats absolutely wear your ass out.  I honestly think that squatting 3x a week is too much for my legs, especially being the fact that I am on them.  I am going to squat Monday's and Fridays from  here on out.

Rows were outstanding again, although I had a nasty inner-ear thing happen after erecting myself from my first set.  Like a gun had gone off and I wasn't wearing any ear pro.
I had a similar thing happen a few weeks back in the middle of dead lifts.  It didn't feel like a gun had gone off, it felt more like instant pain as if I had an ear infection.

Trying to get up the strength to go to the gym now.

I wish I had known about this routine 10-12 years ago.  I could probably have easily hacked the squatting 3x a week.

I don't know how either of you guys have been squatting 3x/wk for as long as you have, you both seem to have milked a lot of progress out of the routine.  Rippetoe calls it Starting Strength for a reason after all.

That loud noise or pain in your ear(s) is probably just a blood vessel in your brain(s) bursting, I wouldn't worry about it.

Goddamn Stanford bastards just tied the game at 6.  Top of the 5th, beautiful sunny day in Corvallis.  Thought you should know.

I didn't make it to the gym tonight.  I had to run a few errands and by the time I got to the gym I would have had 26 minutes.  Hopefully I can get my workout tomorrow after turkey hunting.

My damn legs are beat between the squats, dead's, skiing and cruising timber they are shot I do believe.  I know they would like a week on some tropical beach somewhere.

I feel your pain buddy.  Haven't set foot in the gym since the 'kaleidoscope' episode of last Friday.  The killer headache has not gone away, CPA tells me this morning to write checks to the fed & state totaling $22k, and my man Stutes just gave up a 5 run lead in the last two innings.  On the bright side, the reserve of beer & muscle milk in this house is enough to sustain a division size force for several months.  Good luck tomorrow.

$22k?  Wtf man, barricade yourself.

To be honest, the only way I've been able to sustain 3x a week is my rest.  I've actually put more planning into my sleep schedule than anything else.  Hell, the routine was already spelled out for me.

I made sure to get extra rest every night the week or so leading up to it, and I try to get 8 hours religiously.  A surprise 6p-6a tomorrow night isn't going to help matters, although my weekends are generally exercise-free.

It's amazing how much difference an extra 30 minutes of sleep can have on performance when you're pushing the limits of your body.  Are you still making progress with your squats on this schedule?  If so, you've got great recuperative powers, color me jealous.

Yeah, $22k.  That's $22k in addition to the quarterlies I've already paid.  Bear in mind though, according to Hillary & Barack I'm getting a free ride on the backs of the working poor.

So I got that going for me.

Funny you mention sleep.  This routine has been a killer for my early morning rises.  At the same time, any person who suffers from insomnia would be cured within days of starting this workout.

Man that sucks.  I tell you what, it is HARD trying to stay positive during times like this.  Seems like just 2-4 years ago times were much better.  Only going to get worse if one of those crackpot socialists gets in the Whitehouse.

Made it to the gym.  Since I wasn't going to do squats, I just added 5lbs to everything.  To add further insult to injury I decided to do 2 sets of dumbbell snatches to failure.

I have returned from Week 11 day 1, w/o 'A'.  Squats felt great since reacquainting myself with the heavy weight.  Bench was outstanding with only one missed rep, and DL's were terrible.  I just couldn't get my starting position right, wound up psyching myself out.

I did pretty well tonight, or so I thought.  Squats were good, (no groin pain) as was bench.  I cranked up 5 more lbs on the DL's, then on the 5th rep I felt pain in my lower back......shrugged it off and did my dips.  Now my lower back is in agony, right at my L4 and L5.  I don't know what the hell happened.  I don't think my back rounded and I don't have any tingling in my leg but something is wrong.  I hope all I did was tweaked it a bit and that I will be ok tomorrow.

Ok, now that I have had a nights rest, the back is better........still not right but better.  I would describe it as "tender" and I am having no symptoms of a blown disc, not right now any way.  Just pain right in the center of my back at the waste line.

I am thinking a weeks rest may be called for at this point.

I'd encourage you to take a deload week, but not rest.  You're the only who can be the judge, though.

I made it through the day cruising timber but sitting down is putting pressure right on my back.  Doesn't feel to comfortable.  I am able to function, I just.......hurt.  Feels like I got hit in the back with something or as if I landed on the rock.  I'll take it day by day.  Perhaps a deload week is what the doctor asked for.

Wish I knew what I did to the back.

W/O 'B', feeling very worn out by it today, but it was good nonetheless.  I got stuck in the hole in the middle of my first and last sets.  Had to unload the bar and quickly pick up 2 or 3 more reps to complete.

Managed 4/4/4 on my presses with the same weight that had me at 5/3/3 last week, so I may be able to move it up again.  Rows were primo, 5 all across.

I am taking the evening off.  The wife wants me to spend some time with her and I have yard work that needs to be done.

Funny about the "stuck in the hole" comment.  My wife bought a set of bands that she uses at home and she was doing squats with them, but only 1/4 squats I said "You need to go down all the way......like I do"

She gave me a and I gave a and a

I'll make up workout "B" tomorrow.

So, my schedule has been MWF on Rippetoe, T/Th/Sat run.  The runs alternate between HIIT and distance (~3 miles at most).  They seem to have gotten easier and easier, so today I went 20 laps in the pool instead. ...

I've decided to drop the Saturday runs.  I figure I'll just earn my Saturdays off with good performance on Tues. and Thurs.

Don't mean to keep whoring my own thread...

I attempted a 10# squat increase on Monday and have struggled to get my full numbers all week until today w/ a 5/5/4.  Felt good to get it over with.

After bench, I chose not to pull due to a GM on Wednesday, so I headed out to the dip/pullup thing.  Some kooky bitch was straddling the dip bars with her thighs doing yoga stretches... or something.  I've seen her before, using the cable rowing machine by throwing her legs up on the weight stack and rowing, shakra crap with her hands...

I stood there for about 5 minutes, tapping my foot, but to no avail.  I was interrupting her workout.

Strong squats today, on an empty stomach no less.  The bitch who stole my dips was back though.  She walked right up to the rack while I was resting between press sets and stole a plate while I stared at her.  It really helped me launch through the set though when I had to slam another plate on to emphasize that I was using the equipment.

Moving on to rows, they sucked today.  Don't really know why but I just couldn't get everything to fire in the right order as far as shoulders retracting, lats arching, elbows through the roof.  I'll blame the woman.

Last night was pretty weak.  I went light on everything, and it was a good thing because I was drained.  I did have to kick an idiot out of the power rack who was doing curls  in it, mean while there were 7 open benches scattered throughout the gym.

WTF, she took the plate off the bar?  Sounds like she's trying to provoke you into asserting your dominance.  Next time maybe you give her a swat on the ass and tell her get back over and straddle the dip bars 'til you get there.

Tonight was a good workout.  Went light, but I went with a lot of intensity.  Giving my self only 25 seconds of rest per working set.

As the night has wore on, I have some rather stiff knee pain  in my left knee.  I have had problems with it in the past.  Downed 2 Aleve no worries.

The gym was desolate which was nice.

I couldn't ignore my ego and just went for it.  My back feels fine though. Knock on wood...

The only thing out of the ordinary were my presses today.  I went 4/4/3 and felt like I couldn't rest enough, even with 4-5 minutes between sets.  Try again Wednesday.

I switched to the low bar squat position today after my back incident.  My shoulder flexibility will improve after a few more days of using it.  It definitely helped posterior activation out of the hole.  I think I'll stick with it, since that what it says to do in the bible, er Starting Strength anyway.

5s all across for bench and a set of deadlift warmups.

Work out B

Everything was weak as shit.  Rows felt better than average but I went 4/3/4 on the squats and 4/4/4 on the overhead press.  I wasn't even at my max's.

You too?

I had to lower my squat weight while I got reacquainted with the low-bar position and my hams are absolutely wrecked.  Don't know why I bothered with high-bar without WL shoes even though I'd managed to make it work for me.

Presses, not so great.  Something like 3/4/3?  I haven't even written it down yet.  Rows, pull-ups, yadda yadda just get me the fuck OUTTA THERE.

Lowered my squat weight again to adjust for the low bar.  I can definitely lift more with it, but I can't balance yet.  Too used to being more vertical.  Feels great though.

Bench was so-so.  I made a 5lb increase for 4/4/4, so I'm pretty sure I can nail it next Wednesday.

On a side note, I've put on a good 6-8lbs in the last couple of weeks without adding inches to my waist, so I'm feeling pretty good.  I haven't consciously been bulking but I've definitely been on a farm diet lately (whole eggs, whole milk, chicken w/ skin, etc).  I'll see how far I get before I look like Cartman on Weightgainer ProX 2000.

Workout B

5/5/5 on the squats.  No problems but the weight felt heavy though.  I was at 90% max, if I can walk on Wednesday I will add either 5 or 10lbs.

3/3/2 on the bench at max weight

Hit my 5 reps on the DL's which was at 90% as well.  After my 4th pull I noticed that the vein in my neck was looking close to popping.

Did my dips (w/35lb plate) and my weighted sit ups with 45lbs plate.

Beat

Diner was a fresh salad with roman and spinach with the wife's home made olive oil dressing
Deer meat wrapped in bacon and chicken marinaded with Italian dressing and grilled

didn't make nearly enough.  Going to have to dig into a quart of cottage cheese I do believe.

It was a good workout tonight, with the exception of me pulling my right groin muscle again.  It was the first night squatting at 100% max, went 4/4 and was trying HARD to get 4 reps out of the last set and on the way up I did some stupid reflex cheating move and felt it twinge.

4/4/4 on my presses at 100% max and 5/5/5 on 100% rows.  However on the last rep of each set on the rows I failed to bring the bar to actually touch my sternum..

Pull ups were good as well.

Depending on the condition of my groin (icing it right now) I am going to start a morning cardio run.  It seems I have gone a little over board with the eating.  I am now up to 178lbsmake that 181, about 7 of it seems to be centered in my love handles and midsection so I am going to try to burn it off.

I really do hate running.  My cardiovascular fitness seems to need some attention anyway.

My nagging groin pull prevented me from doing any kind of good squats.  After a few light warm up sets, I loaded it up for what I squatted on Wed.  No dice.  Dropped it down to 60% and squeaked out some reps.

I went 4/3/4 on the bench.  Feeling good about my bench numbers.  I am improving slowly, but steadily.

I was apprehensive on my DL's because of the groin thing.  I was at my 100% max, but halfway up on my 4th pull I felt it twinge so I just dropped the bar.  I knew if I tried to make the pull I would do something stupid.
