Here is an update for those that do remember. However most probably don’t remember but the gist of it was that I am tired of waiting for terrible turn around times for our merchandise. It’s not really for making apparel for others though we might.

So I looked into it and discovered direct to film printing and it is pretty slick. We bought a really expensive press and then did absolutely nothing for a long time.

Well this week I got a bunch of shirts in, the film is ordered, and next week we are jumping in. We have a special event with a band releasing a single and so I figured it was a good test bed for us to do a smaller number of shirts and figure this out.

Here’s to solving problems!

A heat press?

They aren't very expensive.  A stahls is under a grand and you can get them direct from China for as low as 150-200.

Well you know…it’s not like I have anything else going on or anything.

But after this we kind of know the process of ordering the transfers and etc so it will be much easier.

I have no idea what you have going on besides posting here. And I don't mean to be disrespectful or mean-spiritied, but this is really just a "we're one day closer" thread.

Wow.  You went for the Cadillac, huh?

Their hottronix/Maxx clamshells are half that price new.  They used to sell demo units from trade shows for about half price that were like new.

Best of luck.

Well yea, that is exactly what it is. When I did the original thread there were a lot of folks interested in this as a potential side hustle. For me it is solving a supply issue for our own merch.

But now that we are literally receiving the materials to do this next Wednesday or so I thought I would resurrect the conversation.

I can tell by the amount of alcohol present you hired a real printer to run that machine...

I am curious to see how well DTF survives being sweaty and laundered.

I remember how much trouble you had getting small runs printed; hopefully this will be a Good Thing.

From everything I have read DTF is just as good or really better than traditional screen printing. It allows you to do some cool stuff.

This first run is 62 shirts. We will likely run a few hundred at a time for our regular stuff.

Run an extra one and beat it up like a shop rag to see how well the ink adheres to the substrate.

I also wonder if other variables like humidity play a factor in adhesion? I am sure there are thinner and cheaper films that play into that as well.

Will the liquor police have anything to say about running other businesses on site? They seem to have a lot of concerns generally...

A good friends family business was screen printing, they had shirts all over the world out of a small warehouse in Ruckersville VA. His parents sold and retired years ago, they did very well.

One of our wealthier clients started a company after the big guys couldn’t deliver swag on time. From what I understand it’s doing well also.

The best thing you could do at this point OP is sell the machine on CL.  Better you get out now before you lose more money on your “business venture”.

Ha!  Just kidding.  Curious to see how this goes.

In my previous life we sold a ton of band merch where I worked.  To alleviate stock issues for slow moving designs I tried to introduce the transfer option.  Nobody was into it.  The consensus was that our clientele would reject transfers for their look and feel.  So we stuck exclusively with screen printers.  Kinda wish we would have tried it anyway just to see.

Now screen printers are drying up. These transfers are softer touch, far more flexible, more precise graphics or can be exactly like standard screen prints with literally the same kind of ink.

For small graphics and text, but not for a full graphic tee or larger design.

Each has its pluses and minuses.

Were you planning to buy a dtf printer or just rely on someone else to supply the transfers?

Too bad you can't call Iran to help you with that, because they don't have nukes.  Israel will just have to do it themselves.

Run some practice tees and wash the hell out of them. Tumble dry on low to high. Stretch them. Wear them. Analyze them. Make adjustments to press time, etc. As someone mentioned, check into the humidity of the shirts as you press them (pre-press)?

In the past I hated them because it was like having a big patch of plastic on your back instead of breathable fabric. Are these new transfers better?

<---- DTG printer for 18 years.

DTG is expensive to get started. Printing on dark shirts with white ink/colors is slow, expensive and the daily maintenance is a pain.

Yes, some of the printing is quite light. There are a variety of options of different films for different applications. You have seen plenty of shirts done with direct to film and just didn’t know as most people wouldn’t know the difference.  I have had plenty of samples in my hands pulling them stretching them, and picking at them. I am impressed with the stuff which is why we went forward with it.

We have had our own merch since day one. It’s necessary and others essentially pay you to advertise.

I have watched countless videos comparing the two and listening to advice. I think DTG is not as popular for smaller shops for a variety of reasons.

So away we go…I am super happy with the results! We tested several other types of transfers from this same company and they are all fantastic.
