Quentin Tarentino was wrong.. THIS is the best prison movie ever made.. and Big Al was the funniest guy ever filmed. His insults are top tier (see what I did there)

Brawl in Cell Block 99 was quite good, if not extremely realistic.
The narrative was more of a mythic telling of what a man can do against all odds, using prison as more of a metaphor.
By the same director/writer of Bone Tomahawk and Dragged Across Concrete.

Weird, the films writer Richard Collins, doesn't look like any Collins Iv'e seen.

Collins had a successful film career up until the Hollywood 19 were called to testify before HUAC in October, 1947. At that time he agreed with the rest of the so-called unfriendly witnesses to plead the First Amendment Rights of free speech. Of the nineteen, only ten (the "Hollywood Ten") were called and it wasn't until 1951 that Collins was called to testify before HUAC. By this time his politics had changed and he agreed to testify becoming one of the first "friendly witnesses."[citation needed]

Collins admitted to formerly being a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League, Hollywood Writers' Mobilization, the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee (JAFRC), and the Progressive Citizens of America (PCA). Despite his past, Collins claimed that he stopped paying his Communist dues in 1939. Collins became infamous for naming people he knew to be in the Communist Party, even close friends. In all, he ultimately named 26 of his colleagues. Despite being heavily involved in the Communist movement in the 1930s, when he attended four to five meetings a week, he professed that he no longer followed their doctrine and never saw anything he did as an effort to undermine the security of the United States

These days as someone who has been inside the walls for 15 years and transporting in the fed system. Everything from campers to max to psych/smu, Shot Caller is where it's at. I'll have to watch the OP's film however. First I've heard of it.

Maybe in days when prisons held criminals and the mentally ill were off in looney bins.

Now it is likely all American Me combined with One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest.

None of the guys from Quentin's movie would be shoving razors from their shaving kits up their urethra, repeatedly, for a trip to the hospital.

Lucille!

That's the first movie I thought of, too, but then I started wondering if maybe QT is considering it as a separate genre, as a chain gang movie.

A classic "prison movie" should probably have the common elements of an exercise yard, a concrete cell block, and lots of idle time for the cons.
