What is the reason / purpose of driving with your red and blue lights on solid (not flashing)? Ive seen it a couple times lately and dont recall seeing it before. No one pulled over, and not driving fast, just normal.

Because that's what the policy manual and state law says.   No one said it had to make sense.,

Rear only? They were on a stop or with a disabled vehicle and forgot there on. Happens all the time. Whoops

Its the steady burn or cruise mode.

Use it when the turd begins touching cloth.

Sometimes cops forget to turn their lightbar off or off all the way?

OP,

I don’t know why the specific officers you are seeing do that, but in bigger cities, having the steady mode on helps incoming officers find you at a scene (especially after dusk).

As to why you would drive around with them on.. I don’t know.

I try not to attract attention to myself.

Are the lights solid but on at a much lower intensity than if they were flashing?

Those are cruise lights.

Where I live, they are there so marked cruisers can better identify themselves after dark.

There is a large snowbird population here. If requested, the local PD will make sure your home is secure daily. They check your doors, windows, garage, and wave to your Ring cameras. It would be pretty disconcerting to see a man dressed in black with a flashlight on my neighbor's property at 2AM.

Hence, cruise lights

They have to have the solid blue lights on at all times in Hawaii. I like it because I'm usually speeding and it alerts me to their presence so I can slow down until they're out of sight.

Well, we only have blue lights around here. Ours also don't have an option for a steady non flashing light.
Therefore, I can only assume that the addition of a red light freezes up lightwaves.

Or you are traveling so fast that your mind doesn't register the flashing.

Because I goddam near spilled my coffee and in the process of saving it I bumped my lightbar knob one position over.

Then my phone slid off the armrest and bounced off the console. That's why my left alley light's on.

I cant stand it when guys do that crap.  There are other ways to accomplish that goal without turning on the bullet magnets
The officer in question likely forgot to turn the light bar off after leaving a call or security gig

In SC, a rather large SO makes their deputies ride with cruise lights on to signify that they are in service and not on a call. I’ve also heard this same SO can have its supervisors activate/view body cameras of subordinate deputies in real time...

It's probably a community policing initiative to show the community you are in the neighborhood.  It actually is a very nice signal for everyone to scatter a few blocks away, which reduces chances for encounters, which reduces arrests, which reduces crime stats.

The depressing thing is the couple of times I've accidentally done it, and traffic around me didn't react at all.  ZFG.

I swear, it's amazing how many people react to lights and siren by just slowing down and trying to block you from passing.

It’s a way to stop cars without activating the body worn cameras or squad camera. Used by shady POs when fishing for stuff. Said POs more than likely have stickers like this on their lockers as well.

It's called cruise lighting.   It's to be visible to the public.   Departments have different uses for it.

No clue, ours don't even have that capability (that I know of) and have never seen that in Michigan where I've been a cop for 26 years. Must be a regional/state/dept mandate?

Real answer- it is done by Euro cops and everyone knows that Europeans are the gold standard for all things....

So, enlightened leaders wanting to show how European and civilised they are, do what euro cops do.

It is stupid and reduces officers ability to catch criminals.

LOL, this. I was issued a new patrol car at the same time we were transitioning from strobes to LEDs. First gen LEDs were shitty and had a convoluted switch panel. I was trying to get used to it at the beginning of my shift and left them on. Driving around I was thinking "Wow! People sure are being polite on the road today." But the moment you put the siren on, the motoring public vapor locks.

A couple hours later I was heading to get some more gas and passed my Sgt. He got on the talk-around channel and asked me where I was going and why was I out of my zone. I told him I needed gas. He then asked if I was about to run out or something, because getting gas doesn't require blue lights. Ah, being a rookie was so much fun.

I’ll do it to slow people down in lieu of pulling them over..pull behind them...hit them with the solid red/blue until they slow...then I turn them off and drive away.

So funny to watch the local hooligans stash their hard drugs when they see the blue light coming down the coast road towards a beach park at night.

They see the blue light coming, stash their shit, cop tells them to leave the beach parking lot so he can lock up. They pull out, wait for him to lock the parking lot gate and leave, they then park on the side of the road, walk back into the park and keep doing whatever it was they were doing.

From what I have seen, very little law is enforced on some of the islands.
