While good gear helps, any camera will do in a pinch. Shot with my 2nd Gen iPhone SE.
The 105 Macro would have helped (mo betta bokeh), and more control over shutter and aperture wouldn't have hurt, and Lawdy I'd like the noise performance of a bigger sensor, but frankly I'm pretty surprised at the capability. Particularly the DoF. I took about 10 frames to get one in focus. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the bokeh in this one is actual bokeh, and not a "filter" that the camera code used. Note in particular the "dandruff" on this Forest Tent Caterpillar's hairs; this is actually fluff that he's scraped off the emerging white oak as he's traveled to his feeding spot. Spent the last 3 days working in the People's Republic of Marylandistan; hate the politics and government, but my fucking God, they have some timber. I've been knocking around the woods for 32 years now, seen more than my fair share of fine wood, and this tract is in the top 5 of the best timber I've ever seen.
This patch was pure yellow-poplar. Basal area was 360 sq. ft/acre, which is at the upper limit of what's biologically possible. The SMALLEST tree in this shot was 16" in diameter. Haven't worked up the volume yet but I imagine it's running about 35,000 board feet per acre. That's about 8.5 log truck loads of wood per acre. Outside the Pacific Northwest, and some deep lower Mississippi bottoms, this level of stocking just doesn't exist. Except here. 360 BA YP Canopy by FredMan, on Flickr 360 BA YP by FredMan, on Flickr |

Marked in pi units of inches, to convert tree circumference to diameter in inches. That’s a 39” yellow-poplar, overb3 feet through. That’s a big fucking tree for eastern forests. We’re interested in how much volume the tree has, so we can figure it’s value. To calculate volume we need two measurements, diameter and height. We get height by eyeballing it (surprisingly accurate, when you’re good like I am), or use instruments such as a clinometer, or more recently a laser hypsometer like this: YK1614 Nikon Laser Hypsometer by FredMan, on Flickr If you’re interested in watching a plot get sampled, watch this video. Starts out moving to my next plot, marking, and measuring. I’ll sample about 50 plots on a normal day. Didn't know such a thing existed. So each 1" marking is essentially 3.14"?
Edit - Okay, watched a 6 minute video of a guy measuring trees and learned nothing. I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll try to read up on the subject. One question though, what's the little angled piece of plastic/glass? |

It allows us to quickly determine if a tree is "in" and therefore needs tallying. We call it "point sampling" as opposed to "plot sampling". We can also use the prism to rapidly determine basal area, which is the primary number we use to evaluate stocking level (how many trees out there vs. how many the site can support). I usually use a 20-factor prism, which means every "in" tree represents 20 square feet of basal area. If you go out on an acre of forest, cut down every tree at 4.5 feet off the ground, and measure the surface area of all those stumps, that's basal area. It lets us get a good statistically valid sample while tallying the minimum number of trees. It costs money to count trees, so we want to count the absolute minimum we need to achieve the target level of accuracy. The standard is +/- 10% at the 95% confidence level for total tons; what that means is with the sample we collected, we're 95% sure that the total tons of wood is within 10% of the sample estimate. Here's me in some ginormous white pine. These trees are 110-120 feet tall, and 18"-28" in diameter. Big wood. White Pine Canopy Selfie by FredMan, on Flickr |

View Quote I really like this one. I'm curious if the highlights around the sun could be blown out a bit more, a bit more of a radius, and a bit more in the water, maybe? I didn't have the time to do photos of the Narragansett power station in Rhode Island this past winter. It was that, or NYC, one or the other. |
