I wonder why Putin would have Trump do such a thing.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/us-test-fires-missile-previously-banned-under-lapsed-treaty

The Pentagon announced Monday that the military conducted a test over the weekend of a type of missile that previously had been banned for the last 30 years under a treaty between the United States and Russia.

The test, which took place off the coast of California, marks the resumption of an arms competition that some analysts worry could increase U.S.-Russia tensions after the two world powers abandoned a long-standing treaty earlier this month.

The Trump administration says it remains interested in useful arms control but questions Moscow's willingness to adhere to its treaty commitments.

The Pentagon on Monday said it tested a modified ground-launched version of a Navy Tomahawk cruise missile. The department said the missile was launched from San Nicolas Island and accurately struck its target after flying more than 500 kilometers (310 miles). The missile was armed with a conventional, not nuclear, warhead.

I was hoping with us getting out of that stupid treaty with those Rooskers, we could

And it scared the ever-loving jeebies out of the Soviet command structure because we could first-strike decapitate them and there wasn't enough time for them to get to their bunkers outside of Moskva.

If I remember, that was the deal we agreed to, we always gave up more than the Soviet because our stuff worked.

New US IRBMs would set up our own  fortified chain of islands if they were deployed from the Philipines ,  Senakakus, Ryukyus, and Korea. A real kick in China`s strategic nuts would be placing them in Taiwan and/or Viet Nam.

Oh they were a thing then the idiots in DC  made it not a thing.

And since their bringing them Back it seems it will contemplate the MLRS and HIMARS systems very well.

There are only a few on display. Pima County has one of the only full set ups remaining, IIRC.

GLCM bunkers still exist at RAF Molesworth, UK.

INF was a good trade. But the deal was dead.

I argued this course of action (withdrawal from INF, deployment of IRBMs to the Pacific) in my Masters' thesis in 2012. Honestly, I also argued for a European carve out to allow both us and the Russians to deploy to the Pacific.

I wasn't taking the piss out of you, its just shocking that a mobile medium range missile

would qualify as the most advanced weapon we ever fielded.  I know the P2/GLCM

scared the crap out of the Soviets, but I figured that was because of the decapitation

ability.  P2s in South Korea, Japan, the Phillipines, Taiwan and everywhere else

seems like fun.

Thing was that our INF covered weapons DID potentially allow the Russians to go an exchange and keep the US and the USSR off the "cities burnt" box score. This dynamic, in turn, always could put into question our willingness to use nukes to defend our NATO allies.

Once weapons were either/or strategic, and exchange would have US strategic equities baked into the calculus, and this paradoxically strengthened the Alliance nuclear card's deterrent.

Not really.  GLCM and Pershing 2 were planned from the start as bargaining chips to get rid of the SS20 threat.  Reagan favored nuclear disarmament, but his way of achieving it was to field the most advanced nuclear weapons possible.

My understanding was that we pursued GLCM/P2 as part of the Third Offset and the ability to hold Soviet targets at risk without using a strategic weapon, but that it morphed into bargaining as Gorbachev was willing to negotiate after Chernenko/Andropov went aggressive into strategic posturing and arms programs.

So the Army spent money on a program for over 30 years (P1, P1a, P2) as a bargaining chip?
