I know it's a crappy picture, but can anyone tell what rifle Patty Hearst is holding in this classic pose in front of the SLA flag?

I think it's a chopped down M1.
Among the charges they were wanted for were NFA violations. |

Wow I had never heard of her
Wikipedia just blew my skirt up Full presidential pardon too |

Really? Not being a dick but how old?

This has been hashed out years ago on GD. Some degree of uncertainty remains as to what exactly she was carrying.
In the 90s she was pretty hot. |

It’s not the one she’s holding there, but a wise man once said that Patty Hearst heard the burst of Roland’s Thompson gun and bought it.

According to Wiki... Seven-headed cobra DeFreeze was the SLA's only black member. His seven-headed SLA hydra-like cobra symbol was based on the seven principles of Kwanzaa, each head representing a principle. The Swahili words for these seven principles are: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). The appearance of the symbol of the seven-headed cobra[3] on SLA publications indicates that it was copied from the ancient Indian and Sri Lankan seven-headed naga; carved stones depicting a seven-headed cobra are commonly found near the sluices of the ancient irrigation tanks in Sri Lanka and are believed to have been placed there as guardians of the water.[4] The particular graphic of the seven-headed cobra used by the SLA may have been copied from an illustration in The Lost Continent of Mu by James Churchward. |

1975 shootout with LAPD and the SLA, sort of one-sided. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhyDRbdVlS0 |

This is a decent Robert Redford movie (from 2012) concerning the Weather Underground during the same 1960's era as the SLA bullshit.

Well she was kidnapped and raped, so I would say she has a pretty good excuse for buying into their crazy ideas. Could have been as simple as appeasing them so the rapes stopped.
Anyhow, she was just some rich college kid who happened to become a target. It isn’t like she was some crazed revolutionary prior to the kidnapping. Anyhow, all that is left to say is that I hope it hurt when the SLA got burned up in the fire fight with LAPD. They deserved it, and decided to go out that way, so the hell with them. |

The SLA used M1 carbines modified into full auto with parts available at gun shows in those days.
They thought it was funny that they were buying all their guns from right wingers. |

View Quote A bit different, but children adopted by native Americans after being taken captive often integrated into native American life even though they saw the horrific fate of their white family. And maintain fondness for the native Americans even though they remember the rape, torture and murder of parents and siblings. I actually think there are aspects of human behavior that suggest adaptation to other tribes when taken captive, at least among the young/females. |

I've always thought the M1 carbine in this picture was indeed scoped.
There was quite a market post WWII for items to 'Bubba' the M1 carbine into a more woods-friendly rifle. I've seen checkered Monte Carlo stocks and other 'conversions,' some mildly-humorous, some gag-inducing. Mounting flashlights on rifles was far less common in the era and I would be surprised if that's what it was. |
