It is time we all start thinking about ways to secure our communications with our compatriots. I urge you all to look at Signal. Everything is encrypted end to end. It is open source and the source code has been audited for chicanery. It works on your phone, tablet and PC. You can piggyback on top of a VPN for extra security.  Anyway, I just wanted to throw this out there and maybe help some folks out in these uncertain times.

Honestly, I haven't used the groups yet. I just use it to exchange spicy memes (the kind you get banned for here) with likeminded friends and relatives.  I suspect it works just like a group iMessage channel.

It also does encrypted audio and video chat. The audio chat is great, the video chat is not up to the same quality as facetime, but it works. I don't use a fake name but it might not be the worst idea.

of course nothing is secure 100%

But signal makes it at least sporty for them.  Plain txt capture is boring.

He's trying to scare people into not using secure coms because it might not be secure if your device is compromised.

Which is true.

But it's fucking better than nothing

The .gov will be cracking down very shortly on ANYTHING that is online and encrypted, that is not directly related to your specific business needs, such as financials or health records.  I guarantee there will be nothing by the end of the year that is a secure way to communicate personal messaging.

Fuck it, I'm reaching out to a few buddies to see if they want to swap from hangouts to Signal. Has to be more secure than Hangouts.

Thanks for the heads up, OP and HondaCiv!

They have been having that wet dream for 30 years. The cat is out of the bag and not going back in. Strong encryption is basically so ubiquitous at this point that scanning the wire for it to find "violators" would be impossible. Everything required to do it is open source and fairly easy to get working. For example, if Signal were banned from the app store tomorrow, I could take the source code I have downloaded, compile it on a Mac and sideload it onto my phone without much issue. The genie isn't going back in the bottle.

How Signal Instant Messaging Protocol Works (& WhatsApp etc) - Computerphile

Best to learn how something works before trusting it.

Just because you're encrypted does not mean you know who's on the other end.

Signal is good to go if you verify your safety numbers.(which it will inform you if they change)

For end-to-end encryption and supported features,  yes.  For basic SMS/MMS, no.

I've been using Signal as default messaging app for years.  Encrypted with other Signal users and plan SMS/MMS with everyone else.  Signal also does voice & video chat as well and I've used it a bit as well

Signal will secure your.....errr....signal.  The data will be unimpeachable end-to-end.

Which is why they (the THEY they) don't try to decrypt it in real-time.  They go after the other end.  If you aren't 100% on the person you are talking to....don't add them to a Signal convo.  If the other person's phone is unsecured (whether that's the wife unit monitoring it or the Sheriff's department looking over his shoulder), Signal doesn't matter.  If your phone has a nosy app that's either logging your comms or sending them to Agent Smith....Signal doesn't matter.

Tradecraft counts as much as technology. Don't do sensitive comms with someone you aren't 100% on.  Don't do sensitive comms on the same phone you do your Instacart orders on (or browse Pornhub, Google, or Arfcom on).  Go get a burner phone and cash prepay data/minutes, at a Wally-World two counties over, while wearing your COVID mask.  That's the phone you wanna use (and it should be OFF most of the time).

If Google is on your phone it's listening to you. I was watching season 1 of shark tank and decided to look up some of the company's to see if they exist today. One of the company's name was washed up Hollywood. I only typed washed in the search bar and the first search suggestion was washed up Hollywood. I never said their name out loud but it was said maybe a couple of times on the TV. I always knew apple was listening because of siri. But that shit freaked me out.

It is the codemaker/codebreaker battle that has always gone on.

This time, though, with the Left in charge of basically everything, they will take other avenues to make it as hard as possible, to almost impossible to use for anything remotely worthwhile.

Yes, from an absolutely technical standpoint you are correct.

But.

Watch privacy laws begin vanishing. (can't have sneaky domestic terrorists in our midst, if you aren't one, why are you worried...that's all we are looking for)
Watch regulations change with what you can load on your phone (see how vehicle manufacturers and government are working together to make modifying your car or ECU difficult or illegal)
Watch carriers work hand in hand with government to do everything they can to prevent it (MDM forced onto all phones for some reason or another, probably medical records/vax data that you will be required to have on your phone at all times)
Watch manufacturers attempt to find ways to enforce what can be loaded on phones (only approved apps that have the proper markers in the code that match hardcoded info in the chipset  so they will function...we are only trying to keep you safe)

The technology and ability to be secure are there.  The problem is the entirety of the links around it are not under your control, but you are under theirs.

There is of course the enormous area in-between
1)asking your wife what size "big" tomato sauce is;
2) exchanging state secrets.

For me it was when we had kids and were constantly having to send each other information like SSN, insurance passwords, etc

Or run a pi computer and linux running off a SD card that's encrypted and end to end encrypted comms.

I'm sure there are better solutions as well.

I don't think there's a single platform or system I would trust to be truly secure.

I’m sure a few people don’t want to hear this, like most of what I have to say, but encryption isn’t effective against certain organizations with the tools, and knowledge of how they work.

Thinking they are is a recipe for disaster.

SHA256 hash matches, then its the same.
