Had a friend that for years solo backpacked the canyon for several weeks per outing. Guy had good wilderness and backcountry skills.

Quoted: My dad used to run from one side to the other and back when he was training with his friend that did the crazy races. I never got to spend the time and do that run with him. Meh, I have seen the second largest canyon in the US and I didn't even have to leave Texas to do it

View Quote Last year on vacation in Gatlinberg my In-laws were taking us out to dinner and kept going on about the place they were taking us to having no carrying signs and how I probably shouldn’t. That’s cool, I can respect their wishes. They didn’t say anything to their daughter about not carrying though. |

Bin to south rim twice, north rim once & rafted down the canyon a couple of years ago.
The raft trip (9 days) was awesome. |

South rim for a first visit, especially with kids/family or if travel time is limited. Much more infrastructure, transportation options, and safety railings. Modern accomodations and big-rig RV-friendly campgrounds. Downside - busloads of Japanese tourists. Hot.
North Rim if you have the time to drive up from Las Vegas into Utah and back down into the NW corner of AZ. Much more remote, accomodations are more rustic, campground is more natural, and way fewer safety railings. No one goes there for the day - it's too remote. Pick a trail and hike it - it's on you to stop and turn around before you fall off the edge and die. Cooler than South Rim, as it's 1200' higher. |

I lived there most of my life and never went either. I kind of figured I could go whenever I wanted. Then I moved. First visit back home and I went with my mom and brother (who also had never went) and it was breathtaking. You really should go. It’s a day trip for Arizonans. |

But frankly, if you can only go to one national park, it should be Yellowstone. We've been there 4 times. Did GC once.

Twenty years ago I hiked from the south rim down to the Phantom Ranch and back in one day. Bright Angel Trail I think - about 19mi round trip. It still hurts. Seriously.
It was awesome, though. Started with ice on the trail, wearing a stocking cap, etc., but by the time we got to the bottom I was shirtless and got a little sunburn. Coming back up, false summit after false summit after false summit after... Basically sun up to sun down in early or mid March. The crazy thing is my roommates had gone clubbing the night before, so the only sleep they got was 2-3 hours in the car on the way to the canyon. I'll never be able to do that again, but I'd love to drive in and camp. |

I’ve been 3 times, the first was in the 80s when my mom and I moved up here from GA. The second time I had flown down to Phoenix to move my MIL back to eastern Oregon, so her and I stopped and spent the day there. And the third time my wife and I went to Vegas with friends in October so we all rented a suburban and drove down. It’s been breathtaking each time I’ve been. |

Me and the family tried to go last June….but it was closed due to COVID. A fucking HOLE IN THW GROUND was closed due to COVID !!!!! Plus, there was a widespread fire in the area at the time. Worst vacation ever. . |

Helicopter ride to the bottom, got on a boat and went a mile down river and back. It was awesome. OK, it was fucking awesome. Choppa pilot was a female, was about 40' or less off deck of desert floor. When she hit the edge of the canyon she nosed it over and did a dive into the canyon before leveling out and going low over the river.
All this is on the Indian reservation. Can't do this shit on the Nat. Park area. |

North Rim is best rim. South Rim is ok, but much more commercial and crowded.
