How does one "accidentally" stumble on to an event on the south lawn?

Left the Smithsonian and headed towards Lincoln Memorial. At the Washington Monument said, Hey let's head through this park here to see the White House real quick. Came upon a tent with a few park rangers and regular dressed ladies. They asked if we had tickets for the event that day and we said "No, we know nothing about it. Just walking to see the White House." She asked how many we needed and handed us 4 and a brochure. Said to hurry as they were about to close it up. Continue to walk through the park, through a gate, around the corner, to come upon metal detector and a ton of Secret Service. Went through security and through another gate and around another corner then bam, we are at the back door of the White House.
Wife and I looked at each other and were like, "Did we just do this?"
It ended up being the Fall Garden Tour thing that is open to the public. One of the two days a year the south lawn is open to the public. We had no idea... Just right place at the right time.
