I thought the A 10 Warthog was the first aircraft designed around a cannon.

Neat plane, mid engine with shaft down the middle.

I used to fly it a lot in the early 90s flight sim Aces of the Pacific.

My dad got a u-boat with a p-39, diving after the cannon put holes through sail didn't work as a good plan.

The Russians actually did better with them then we did.

P-39's?  Or P-63's?

These are pics I took of P-63 King Cobras that I got to watch at Osh.

I would like to see the P-39's in action.

From what I understand they are basically a smaller version of a king cobra.

Knew a WWII pilot that ferry them. Said they were dogs and easily overheated. Then again he flew mustangs too.

One of the aircraft that somehow didn't go over well with American airmen so they gave them to the Russians... who used them with great effect in WWII.

Chuck Yeager liked the P39 though, said it was seriously misunderstood.

The Russians loved them, as well as the King Cobra.   They flew at lower altitudes where those things were pretty maneuverable apparently.

My dad has a friend who got an ME-109 with a P-39. The P-39 pilots learned quickly not to fly high, the Germans would cut them to shreds. But, if they flew low, nothing the Germans had could turn as tightly or maneuver as quickly as the P-39.

My grandpa was a machinist for Bell Aircraft in Buffalo before he joined the Marines in WWII.  Somewhere I have a Christmas card that was given to all the employees, showing a P-39 in flight.

Pretty cool aircraft.  Too bad we gave so many to the Russians.

The greatest fighter pilots in the world flew that airplane.  Too bad it was for the wrong side...

That 20mm cannon killed many a IL-2

I can see why they didn't make many, they couldn't find enough midgets to fly them.
