After riding/owning/researching many bikes, I've ended up on an Ibis Ripmo (v1) w/ GX build.  Absolutely love it.  The DW-link is no joke.  Coming from mid-to-late 90's hardtails, this thing is the best of both worlds.  Long-travel squish, but with a more cross-country geometry.

From the 26” thread:

2005 Giant AC, 3x8. Running it damn near stock; only upgrade was from Hayes to SLX brakes.

At 36lbs, it weighs more than my steel tandem bike

Edit: original tires, too... I don’t think I ride it enough

Also a DW Link.  Great climbing and descending.  Quite a nice upgrade from my singlespeed rigid 29er.

Backup and forest road bike is the Surly ECR I built up a few years ago, starting with a 3x10 XT/XTR drivetrain and Chris King headset from a cracked Blur frame I didn’t gave for long.

My Surly has been on most of the rooty, rough trails around Tallahassee...my shoulders don't like it so much, though.  It really shines on the sandy doubletrack and XC type singletrack.  The 3" Knard on the front makes it bearable.  If I was doing it again, I'd get the Krampus instead, so I could put a fork with a little more travel on the front.

If I were to take a liking to single track, I would definately want front suspension, although probably not on this Karate Monkey.  This is the 1st generation KM and I think suspension forks have advanced at least a couple of generations and finding a decent one to fit this old bike might be difficult.  Also, MTB geometry has completely changed.  My KM has the same geometry as my 1995 Trek Multi-track hybrid while the new KM has modern MTB geometry, which is longer and slacker, and maybe some other changes.  I test rode a new KM (they had rigid forks that year) and for off road, it blows away my old KM.

I think people riding older MTB's who haven't ridden a modern version will be shocked at how much better they are at giving a feeling of security and control in their handling.

These two get the most use out of all my bikes. First is a Specialized Enduro since replaced the suspension with a DVO Diamond D1 and a DVO Topaz.  The second is my favorite bike and it's a 2017 Trance 2 and has everything from the factory still.  Enduro has 300 hours trance has 1500 hours.

Making some changes before I’ve even rode it on trail

Gary Fisher Hifi, rebuilt the Fox float RP3, replaced the rear derailleur, chain, rear tube, put on a 31.8 stem and some Raceface Atlas bars which came with the lock on grips. Feels like a completely different bike than when I brought it home. It’s NOTHING like the old Giant I used to ride in 1995. I’m going to ride the shit out of it and then maybe step up to a modern bike

I like it but I don't really have too much experience with other frames to compare it to anything.  I'm not going too terribly fast enough round corners, but it handles some doubles and 4-5' drops to downhill slope well enough.

I'm quite happy with it!  Does everything well enough for me, even choppy trails and drops.  Got the Chromag carbon bars put on and cut down then went for a test ride yesterday to try them out, along with some new Five Ten Freerider Pro shoes.  Shoes are a game-changer, like glue on the pedals!

Just did a little 1x9 conversion with a narrow wide 32T chainring. Everything works fine, I think my next step might be to replace the cassette with a 11-40 or 42. This clears up a little room on the bars for a dropper post lever someday

Looks awesome!

Almost exactly what I’m looking for (although I probably don’t really need it - and my hardtail can indeed do the trails I ride ).

EDIT:

Trek Fuel  EX - 7 seems to be sold out everyplace; cost is about $2,800 when available (before upgrades).  Found here: https://bicyclesportshop.com/fuel-ex-7/

2016 Fuji Nevada 1.9. Converted to a 1x12.

This has been a fun bike to get me back into riding. I'll probably end up going full squish, or at least upgrading to a better bike sometime in 2021. It's getting me back to a good comfort level on a bike, but I'm definitely feeling like I'm reaching it's limits.

If you want to do a full blow 1x12, SRAM has the NX group sets for $375 if you can find them in stock. That should be for the cranks, sprocket, cassette. Shifter, derailleur, and chain. The bottom bracket would be another $30.

I personally think it's worth it to not worry about shifting the front, and, having the 50 tooth in the back makes climbing easy.
