Hell there are ISU-152s at Pripyat at some point I wouldn't be surprised in this timeline to see some Russians get smoked by one.

??Liquidators Tank and other cool vehicles of Pripyat???Will we ever go by car through ExclusionZone

Territorial Defense Forces would be a state function in the US, and no state wants to pay for it, but there is no reason that they couldn't create one and arm it from their own funds with pretty much any weapons they want.

As you say the entire RKG-3 series is perfectly capable against light armor and civilian vehicles. I wouldn't enjoy being in a MT-LB hit with one or more.

You're right about the population, but their economy has improved....life in cities was pretty decent. Food plentiful, even if pay was shit. Standard of living in cities was generally decent, but obviously not like ours.

This is taking them back decades.

I'm an aerospace engineer not a chemist. I had to take organic twice because I failed it the first time. (It was not required but I really wanted a minor in chem and to potentially go to med school)
So, can someone please explain this to me? Preferably in words I can understand like stress, strain, hoop stress, aero loads.

I’ve never been able to understand why there are Jews who *choose* to live in Russia.

while I am NOT a believer in "us funded bioweapon labs in ukraikne" I find it disingenuous that ussd websites listing labs that the us is assisting in upgrading/maintaining to prevent problems (like state or federal funded usda, epa, hygienic etc labs here in the us) removed documentation of such recently.  as if waybackmachine etc doesn't have them.

Any fillings are going to be cracked teeth by the time that belt is finished.
I'm really hoping that it has a tent stake and cord to keep the bipod in tension. It might actually be sort of ok if so.

Another good thread:

The TL;DR point is that the ongoing damage to Ukraine's roads is going to make Russia's logistics harder and harder. As the roads get damaged and/or obstructed, there's going to be more wear on Russia's vehicles, those vehicles are going to move slower, they'll be exposed to attack longer, and they'll deliver fewer supplies to the front in any given day.

The biggest issue is that, by far, no one has ever taken on a major world power over something like this. The US has taken on smaller foes like Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East, etc. and we've had help but for the most part we were the driving force.

Now, it seems like our appetite for getting involved in foreign conflicts has waned. I'm not saying it's gone, and I'm sure we would step up in dire need for righteous intervention, but I'm wondering if we're tired of the burden after so long. The entire time, Europe has been happy to live under the umbrella of protection that the US has been providing. They think war is icky and all too happy to sneer at us. In one fell swoop, they've had to reconsider their presence on the world stage as well as they have come to the realization that you can try to talk your way out of a war all you want, but sometimes it comes for you no matter what.

And think of the corporations. They would sell their children to make a profit. We can go over countless examples of how they've ignored everything the Chinese have been doing and grovel at the feet of Xi Jingpin. Even they have stopped doing business with the Russians. Now there is certainly a debate to be had about how companies can shut down people they don't like, but that's a different conversation. Fact is: During the cold war, no American company would denigrate themselves to do business with the Soviets, yet we're doing just that with the Chinese. It might just serve as a wake-up call to the Chinese that the willingness of western companies to prostitute themselves for economic gain has limits too.

Everything seems to have changed with this conflict. Maybe some of my prognoses are wrong and we'll be back to the same old way of doing things, but I do think at least some of the radical change is going to stick.

I believe you are correct. The geopolitical shift this was going to cause became apparent about day four into this thing, when it was clear that the Russians were going to fail at making a quick, clean sweep into Kiev.

The worldwide backlash was far more than Putin had anticipated once this thing started to drag out.

@Zhukov Have you read any Peter Zeihan?  He's spent the past decade writing a series of books and making many, many presentations about the history of the Global Order (America Police guaranteeing free trade, aka Globalism), why it's folding up shop, and how there'd be a wildfire of regional wars and enormous power shifts following it.  We are living in the post America Police/smoldering wildfires are igniting/power is shifting fast stage right now.  He's a demographic/geographic determinist who backs up his theories with reams of data.  He's not always right on the micro level but I think he's got the broad outline nailed.  He's got a higher opinion of the Russian military than I can currently credit them, I guess we'll see about that. And he didn't predict the instant global cancellation of the Russia economy IIRC.  His books are interesting and there's a thousand videos of his presentations on Youtube.  His opinion has been rapidly becoming more mainstream, he just gave a presentation at Fort Benning.

He recently freaked out this professional financial news reporter about four times in half an hour:

Although - to be fair - the pulling force is pretty damn huge and that might not even be an issue.

ETA: Older video but seeing one of these converted HMGs in use is pretty interesting. Damn stable setup.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm betting he hasn't put a huge amount of rounds through that setup.

It’s not perfect, but for guns they took off of Russian tracks, can’t complain too much when you get a platform tailor made for long range suppression and killing lightly armored trucks.

I thought he was commenting on the spotting scope being right where the right hand of the muzzle brake's ports are. It'll get knocked over or at the least smoke the glass up.

Any fillings are going to be cracked teeth by the time that belt is finished.
I'm really hoping that it has a tent stake and cord to keep the bipod in tension. It might actually be sort of ok if so.

That's working substantially better than I figured it would.
The need to kick the shit out of Russians... is apparently the mother of invention.
