Summary of Putin's speech from Vladimir Rogov (Russian on Telegram):
The main statements of the President at the meeting with military personnel - participants of the Special Military Operation: Ukraine is not our enemy, but those who want to achieve strategic defeat are enemies. The situation on the battlefield is changing, the enemy is blown away. From time immemorial, the West has set the task of dealing with Russia, but we, it seems, will deal with them faster. We also want to end the conflict, but only on our terms. Rhetoric in the West is gradually changing; if earlier they talked about the strategic defeat of the Russian Federation, now they are starting to talk about negotiations. Our armed forces are becoming more combat-ready than any other army in the world. Russia is inflicting sensitive strikes on military targets in Ukraine, they are being carried out today and will be carried out tomorrow. Overall, I assess the progress of the SVO as satisfactory. I would like more drones and means of suppressing enemy UAVs at the front end. Developments need to be implemented faster. Ukraine itself is completely destroyed. Russia does not want to fight endlessly, but it will not give up its positions, this will not happen. The Ukrainian economy exists only on handouts; they travel around countries with an outstretched hand. The Russian economy is stable, inflation has increased, but everything is under control. When Western companies left, everyone expected that our economy would collapse. But we have the lowest unemployment rate in the entire history of Russia. And real incomes of the population have grown. All this suggests that our economy is stable no matter what. Despite the fact that the Russian Federation is in a state of armed conflict, all indicators of Russia's efficiency have increased. Unlike Ukraine, Russia not only preserved the country’s economy, but this year’s GDP grew by 3.5%. View Quote Still no change in confidence, which has been absolutely consistent since February, 2022. NATO/the west are still the enemy and the main cause of this conflict, and it must end on Russia's terms (i.e., a Ukrainian surrender and the Denazification/Demilitarization of the country). The underlying sentiment behind this sort of rhetoric is that Ukrainians are not a people that exist separate from Russia, and that Ukrainian nationalism and any independent Ukrainian state are fictitious notions created by the west - a view held by the Russians for centuries. Thus, it was the west who installed Banderites to run Ukraine and brainwashed Ukrainians into turning against their elder brothers, meaning that the conflict is the west's fault. This highlights the issue with negotiation. What arguments for negotiations lack is an actual concrete proposal that links the theoretical desire for peace with its actual application. Putin will not accept any version of a peace deal that leaves the Ukrainian state and Ukrainian identity intact. Ukraine cannot accept any peace deal that simply allows Russia to reinforce its position and prepare for another advance. The west is unable to offer any credible deterrent to further Russian aggression against Ukraine. I think that lots of the people advocating for negotiations are simply bad faith actors (as can be seen in GD), but those who are acting in good faith need to articulate what that peace ought to look like, acknowledge that Putin does not believe Ukraine to exist, and explain how their plans will actually stop the war instead of simply postponing it. |

This morning patriot, Daniel Ford wrote: "It was the worst of years. My wife died in May and my daughter in September, but what was my sorrow compared to the horror visited upon Ukraine by Vladimir Putin and on Israel by the Ayatollah Khomeini through his proxies in Gaza? As Seamus Heany tells us, while Beowulf's body burned on the funeral pyre, one of his mourners sang in despair "of her worst fears, a wild litany / of nightmares and lament, her nation invaded, / enemies on the rampage, bodies in piles / slavery and abasement...."
As for America, once the leader and still the hope of what we once proudly called the Free World -- what did we do? We dithered, or anyhow our leaders did. And they argued, and they told the victims to be "proportionate" in their response. Wars are not won by the even-handed. Iran has been at war with us since 1979, and Russia since 1918 with a few years off while the USSR transitioned to the dictatorship of Vladimir Putin. And China since 1949! "You may not be interested in war," as Leon Trotsky is supposed to have warned us, "but war in interested in you." For my part, I managed to write a few checks, and I posted to my blog, which is echoed on War in the Modern World on this website. The great movie of 2023 was 20 Days in Mariupol which should win an Oscar (or two!). You can read my review on the Warbird's Book Club, along with those of two actual books, The Ones Who Got Away (escape and evasion in occupied Europe) and Eighteen Days in October (Israel's desperate Yom Kippur War of 1973). Both have lessons for us. How quickly we would have lost the Second World War if we were "proportionate" in responding to the Axis powers in 1941!" Blue skies and a happy 2024 (we can always hope!) -- Daniel Ford. Daniel Ford |

Hamas sent Israel hostage deal proposal, but two sides still far apart, sources say Hamas through Qatari and Egyptian mediators gave Israel on Sunday a proposal for a new hostage deal, according to two Israeli officials and one source with knowledge of the proposal. Why it matters: Israel rejected the proposal, but one of the Israeli officials said the offer shows Hamas is now ready to engage in negotiations on a new hostage deal, even as the fighting in Gaza continues. Hamas has said Israel must end the war before the group would negotiate a new hostage deal. Behind the scenes: The proposal included a three-phase process. Each phase would include a pause in fighting for more than a month in exchange for the release of hostages, one of the Israeli officials said. Under the proposal, Israel would begin pulling its forces out of Gaza during the implementation of the first phase of the deal, which would include the release of roughly 40 hostages, the official said. Some Palestinian prisoners would also likely be released. The proposal would also end the war following the implementation of the last phase of the agreement, which would include the release of soldiers who are being held hostage in Gaza, per the official. What they're saying: The Israeli war cabinet discussed the new Hamas proposal and told the Qatari and Egyptian mediators on Monday that it is unacceptable, the Israeli official said. "The proposal we received from Hamas on Sunday was totally off base and we asked the mediators to try and produce a more acceptable proposal. They are working on it and let's see what happens," the official said. "We are in the pre-beginning of the talks. The negotiations are not stuck anymore but they are also not making significant progress yet." The big picture: Egypt last month proposed relaunching talks on a three-phase deal that would eventually see the release of all the hostages held by Hamas and Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons. Under the Egyptian proposal, the third phase would include the ending of the war, the Israeli pullout from Gaza and the establishment of a technocratic government in the enclave that would not be affiliated with Hamas and would get the support of the U.S., Egypt and Qatar. A Hamas delegation has been in Cairo in recent days to discuss the proposal. https://www.axios.com/2024/01/01/hamas-israel-hostage-deal-proposal-rejects-gaza-war Taking over an intelligence stronghold, uncovering a bunker, locating shafts and eliminating terrorists The fighters of the 401st Brigade Combat Team operating under the 162nd Division carried out a targeted raid on the central building of the 'Eastern Outpost' in Gaza City. ????? ??????? ????? ???? ????? ????? ?????? | ??"?
