I tend to agree with R0N that DoD and IC as institutions had something to lose by saying, "hey, the Russians are really falling apart". Individuals within those organizations, particularly the intelligence agencies, damn sure knew. How far up the ladder that knowledge went (or how far down the suppression went) isn't something we're going to know until enough people die of old age. IMHO. |

Or what would you (all) think is the right way to deploy them? Honestly I think the way to get the best return from them is to use them like HIMARS - against logistical targets as deep as they can as fast as them can, in the greatest volume possible. If they have to run some M270s right up to the front, so be it. Maybe you shoot one initial wave of GLSDB along with HARM at air defenses just to get some data about their effectiveness, but the main focus should be on deep logistics. Clearly Russia has moved their major targets back beyond 80-90km. But to move them further immediately would’ve imposed massive logistical costs. A dump was as safe at 100km as it would be at 150km. Now they aren’t safe. Ukraine needs to smash every target between 90-150km as fast as possible before the Russians decide to pay the price for relocating everything again. After all, Ukraine’s tac air, even if they are now dropping JDAMs (no indication yet) is limited and can’t reach deep targets anyway. HARM can suppress AD to the limit of GLSDB range. |

Could their artillery stockpile have been overestimated as substantially as their other capabilities? View Quote The ammo producer claims to have made 10 million rounds and has been paid for 10 million, but only produced 3 million and pocketed the difference. The producer then bribes the General that receives the ammo to report to the Kremlin that he received 10 million rounds. The Colonel in charge of the ammo depot "counts" 10 million rounds during the annual inventory because if he reports anything less, he will be court martialed. The Colonel also sells some of the actual 3 million rounds to various tribal warlords in order to boost his income. This ingrained behavior of Russian corruption continues down to Lance Private Conscriptovich, and it goes on and on for generations. Then the rubber meets the road in eastern Ukraine and the ammo runs out way quicker than what the reported ammo count is. |
