I am trying to decide whether to go with an Nvidia 3070 video card or go with the 3080?
I plan on upgrading from 1080p to 1440p gaming and 4k is still several years out from being as affordable and available as 1080p is now. Any recommendations? |

When will they be widely available? I'm holding off a pc upgrade until they are.

Are crypto miners still snatching up all the GPUs or has the scarcity been from covid related stuff?

both the 3070 and 3080 are going to fine on 4k. ill probably pick up a 3070 at some point when they're actually in stock, i don't think i can justify the extra 200 dollars for what wont be a noticeable increase in fps.

Quoted: Wait. Otherwise 3080 or even 3090. We're still in that generational shift compounded by gross supply issues. 4k 60fps still is not a reality on bleeding edge games with full RTX lighting on. I have a 3080, and I don't have buyers remorse, but understand what you are buying at this point if you want to jump in, and understand that you will be paying over $1,000 for that if you don't want to play the in stock lottery for months. Realistically, never, because by the time the logistical train is back up to snuff, they'll be obsolete cards. View Quote I know this is not a popular idea but how do you feel about pre-built gaming pcs? https://buildredux.com/ this site seems to have the 3080 in its line up but not currently in stock but seems to be cheaper then buying parts separately right now from the prices I see at pc part stores. |
|
I bought a 3080 before the tariff price hikes took effect and it's great. However, I'd recommend either waiting for prices to go back down and availability to increase. Or if your whole PC needs an upgrade, then a prebuilt on sale isn't a bad option.

3080, but realistically whichever you can get.
I just settled on a 3070 after six days (not in a row) of waiting in line at Microcenter. Fucking scalper in front of me brought what appeared to be his wife and three kids, and the clerk let him and his daughter take the last two 3080s right in front of me. Missed it by one person. Luckily my 3070 is an EVGA, so I’m going to use their step up program to trade it in for a 3080 or 3080ti when stock is normalized. |

Should have posted this up yesterday. I just sold my EVGA FTW3 Ultra 3080.

View Quote Mine I am currently running is a Nvidia Asus Strix 970 card and an I5 4590 CPU with 8 gb of ram its 2015 build I would have to start from scratch even the motherboard would need an upgrade to be able to work with the 10th gen intel processors. Works great for 1080p but is showing its age and its time for a major overhaul into something that can handle 2k gaming and 4k for this new decade. |

I helped my son build a system around a 3080 a few months ago.
He gets so many FPS in Destiny that he can see into the future and predict the weather. Absolutely insane performance. |

I wanted a 3080, but glad I got a 2080 Super when they were available.

Quoted: When I bought my 3080 in November or December, it was realistically cheaper to buy a pre-built PC at that point, because the manufacturers can actually get stock of parts at a fair price. Price it out now and if it still comes out cheaper, why not? Most of my components were still new enough that for me, it wouldn't have been worth it, but if your stuff is by and large older, it's an idea to consider at least. I'd only be on the fence because AMD's next CPUs are going to use a new socket type (at this point I don't know about intel so if you want to use intel chips going forward, I'd look into that) , so it still might be worth waiting until the end of next year in the context of a pre-built machine too. You can only be on the bleeding edge technology for a short period of time no matter the circumstances, but if you buy an entire new computer just for a 3080 and are locked out from CPU upgrades after that, without having to get a new motherboard and potentially RAM also, that might just suck as badly at the end of the day. View Quote We are getting stimulus checks throughout the year wont hurt to hold the money till the end of year and get the new gen card or 3080 at a normal price. |

View Quote I have i5 4690k, overclocked to 4.5 GHz, 16GB of RAM, and a GTX 1660 Super. It does alright on 2k, but I play at 1080p. At 2k it's not enough FPS to benefit much from high refresh monitors, but if you were to slap a 3070 or 3080 in it I bet it would rip pretty good. If you don't want to commit to a full rebuild, and you have a motherboard capable of overclocking, then consider selling your current CPU, RAM, & GPU and picking up a 4690k/4790k, a 16GB kit of DDR3 RAM, and the new GPU of your choice. From the prices I've seen I'd imagine the GPU sale would cover the CPU & RAM upgrade. After that though...your are definitely stuck at a complete upgrade. |

Get the 3080 or, since you might wait a while, a 3080Ti.
My current 1070 Sli is running everything I play just fine. I'm planning on holding out for the Ti version |

View Quote I would have to upgrade the fans and have CPU cooling to a liquid cooled system in my current case, power supply would need upgrade, and upgrade the motherboard to be able to use the new gen intel and GPU like the 3070 and 3080 that will be costlier than buying a new pre-built rig with a 3070 or 3080 right now for around $2k |

The bots are able to snatch the GPUs up before you can even get them into your cart. I'm on EVGA's list but have not seen an email from them yet. I've only been on it a month, so I may be way down the line. |

Might be enough to get by for a little longer. |

What's the power difference between the two? Like will a 650w PSU run a 3080?

Is my 1080ti pretty much trash at this point? Have not used my desktop for games in forever.

I got a 3070 for 1440p. It runs great, but I wish I could have grabbed the 3080 instead. It seems like the 3060 Ti is pretty damn close in almost everything compared to the 3070.
I'm coming from a 1070, so anything would have been a massive upgrade. |

View Quote A 3070 would be a gods plenty for 1440. I don’t think either is truly ready for 4K just yet....that Rez is just too demanding if you want to take advantage of modern high hz monitors. I recently split the difference and went with an lg 34” ultra wide and I’m pleased with the upgrade. Splits the difference between performance and “adding something” over 1440p, while not being as demanding as 4K on my hardware. That being said I think a monitor should be a multi generation buy for a pc. Even if the 3080 can’t push 120-150 frames at 4K now, future gpu upgrades will get closer....so 4K isn’t necessarily a bad path to go. |

Personally, I was going to hold out for the 3080 Ti to replace my aging 1080, but now Nvidia has put that product line on hold due to supply issues.

I think either would be fine @ 4k and future proof for a while.
My experience as first time PC'er in 10 years: Ryzen 3700x + 2070super has been more than enough for UHD, 100% playable @4k for most titles. MS FlightSim 2020 runs at 30FPS at 4kUltra. Just tried Shadow Tomb Raider and it ran 60FPS+ @ 4k high settings. Have fun! I hadn't gamed in ages and it's amazing how good there are now! |

It’s not trash but the 3xxx series really added a lot of raw performance PLUS got more efficient with RTX features. DLSS on the 3 series cards usually gives double digit improvements in frames, especially at higher resolutions with eye candy turned on. The 2xxx really gave no reason to upgrade over the 1080ti, the 3xxx does. |

shit, my r9 3900x and rtx2070 run all my games at 3440x1440 on ultra. (shooters, racing, warband)

I have a ryzen 5 3600x and a 2060. I get around 90 frames at 1440 in Warzone. That’s plenty for me. I’d like a 3080 but I’m in no hurry, thankfully.

That and the fact that they can’t even feed the current demand for existing 3000 series cards. Hopefully they release it in the next 90 days, so I can step up from my 3070. |

The 3070 is a great value, IMO. I'll be selling my 1060 as soon as I get an email from EVGA that I'm at the front of the line for the 3070.
1060 6GB are selling for what I bought mine for 2+ years ago. |
