Today Mr. UPSman delivered my latest pride and joy. This is the 4th guitar he's dropped off recently and asked if I was getting the band back together. I've been wanting a legit Gibson for years and I finally scratched the itch. Today I can say I'm the proud owner of an unburst. I love flametop Les Pauls but my OCD can't live with the wood patterns not aligning. I found this unburst and it was love at first sight. Thanks to Rob et al at Moore Guitars in Evansville, IN. They made the transaction smooth as silk and even through in some additional case candy (strap, string winder, picks, and some local coffee).

That is a good looking guitar right there. Congrats on adding another beauty to the collection.

Thanks guys!

It's crazy. I was seriously bummed when a couple of them sold out from under me. Guitars are flying off the shelves. I found this one and jumped on it. It was meant for the others to go to different homes. This one is where she belongs.

Very nice.

I got one myself last year.

I want another one now.  A 50s style Gold Top with P90s.

Nice! I like it

I notice no top wrapped strings? I wrap my stop bar guitars, to my ears it sounds better. IDK.

It's how I got it. I haven't wrapped the strings on my Epi '59. I guess I'll have to try it one of these days.

I learned that you really can get a discount. For example, Guitar Center sends out coupons with exclusions that basically name every manufacturer you'd want to buy from, including Gibson. But I've talked to several people who have been able to use the coupon.

I purchased mine from Moore Guitars in Evansville, IN. I highly recommend them. They offered the discount before I asked for one. The transaction was super smooth and they did a nice setup before shipping it. It plays like a dream. There was some additional case candy as well (strap, picks, string winder, and even some local coffee). And then they sent me a link to the high-res versions of the images they had posted online.

Beautiful guitar. I love the bourbon burst I got myself for Christmas. Unburst was my second choice. Are you going to do any mods? I'm thinking about putting on vintage tuners just to make it different.

Thanks.

I played a really nice bourbon that I walked away from. Went back to get it and it was gone. In the end I think it all worked out.

I don't think I'll mod this one since it's my first. I'm actually looking at a used Epiphone 60s for $500 that I'm tempted to get as a mod base. One of the the Les Pauls I looked at had Seymour Duncans in it (Pearly Gates and SH-11). I liked the videos I watched along with some other pickup videos I've seen and I'd like to have a less expensive guitar to use as my experimentation platform. I'm not quite ready to take a soldering iron to this one. Tuners would be easy, of course, but I like the Grovers. I wouldn't mind putting Kluson tuners on it down the road.

I'm also looking for something with P90s.

This girl sounds great through my Marshalls.

ETA: Damn. Hit refresh and the Epiphone was gone. You think I'd have learned my lesson by now.

1. I bet the smell was good opening the case up.
2. Pretty guitar. Don't worry about playing it and getting honest wear, it happens.
3. String gauge looks pretty light, you gonna restring it soon?

Top wrap skinny little 9-46 strings. This is the way.

Thanks guys!

@Kruger667, the smell is crazy. I can't get the smell out of my head. I mentioned on a guitar forum I want to turn it into an air freshener for my truck.

The strings feel like 9s which surprised me since I thought the factory puts 10s on them. That's what I run, though, and I'm thinking of trying 8.5s. I was diagnosed with arthritis last year and my left index finger is all fucked up. I've been changing all my 10s to 9s and lowering the action to make things easier. The setup they did was very good. I might tweak the intonation on one or two strings but everything else seems pretty solid across the board.

Here's another pic.

My wild ass guess is 10's are heavy for factory. I play a 7 string 25.5" scale with 10 - 62's tuned down one whole step. 1 and 1.5 step bends on the high e are plenty enough for me. I'm guessing Gibson uses's 9's for their string gauges, especially with standard tuning and the shorter scale length.

Not according to their website. I swear they don't feel like 10s, though.

There are a couple of 60s Studios for about a grand on Reverb if you don't need a Standard.

This thread has me thinking about gettin a Les Paul for my 15 y.o. son.

What are some things to look for?  Pretty sure I’m going to go for a standard model.  I see there are several Slash signature Standard models being sold new.  Anything wrong with one of these vs. a regular Standard?  I like Slash and all of his music but not sure about his Signature model guitar.

Slash models have pickups like his Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 pros and the 50s style wiring and some different finish options. I think the new Standards went back to the 50s wiring and ditched the push/pull pots for coil splitting, out of phase and bridge bypass. The Slash series has a 50s profile neck too so if he likes a thinner neck you can get a 60s Standard with the slim taper neck. Both models are great sounding guitars and fun to play especially through a cranked Marshall.

The Slash has a AAA top vs a AA top on the regular standard and different pickups. The finish options are fewer. I think I'd try to get to a store to see what fits him best. He might prefer the slim taper of the 60s. I definitely find it easier to play than my '59.

Don't put that guitar on a stand that has surgical tubing on it. It will eat into the nitrocellulose finish. I have first hand experience with this.
