Happiness is a relative concept, but an annual index that tracks it in countries around the world has found that the United States and some Western European countries are falling in overall well-being because younger people are feeling less and less happy.
The U.S., in particular, dropped out of the top 20 for the first time, falling to 23rd place from 15th last year, driven by a large drop in the well-being of Americans under 30. The age disparity is stark: The U.S. ranks in the top 10 for those over 60, but for those under 30, it ranks 62nd, pulling down the overall score. The report tracks trends in well-being rather than causes, but one of the editors of the report told NBC News that a myriad of factors, including economic inequality between generations in the U.S., are likely to blame for the low levels of happiness in American youth. This makes the U.S., along with a handful of other countries, such as Canada, Germany and France, the global outliers the report found that in many regions of the world, the young are still happier than the old. The findings, announced Wednesday to mark the United Nations' International Day of Happiness, are part of the World Happiness Report, which has been tracking well-being ratings around the world for more than a decade. It's based on data collected by the research company Gallup and analysis by well-being academics led by the University of Oxford in the U.K. moar |

All the whiners are free to leave at any time and go try their luck elsewhere. Amazes me how many people complain about how bad it is in the US but have no clue what things are really like in the rest of the world.

Doom porn will do that to you.
Really though, external factors certainly play a role, but I'm learning that ultimately happiness is a choice. And I'm far from what folks would consider a "happy person." But I can tell you: it's all MY fault. |

Constantly being encouraged to embrace victimhood isn't working well? Just need all those old happy people to die. Then they'll feel better, no doubt.

The young are brainwashed by the socialists and islamists. That's what evil ideologies do. They bring people down. |

I wasn't unhappy when I was younger. Sure I was poor, but that was expected. I also expected to have to work and pay bills, and struggle with finances, and all the normal shit someone just starting out typically deals with.
There wasn't a constant barrage of influence telling me to rage against reality, either. Doom porn and the victim mentality is cancer, and I'm thankful I didn't grow up in it. |

When people have it easy enough, they find all manner of things to be unhappy and dissatisfied about. Waaaahhhh… I can’t afford 3 Starbucks a day, eating out all the time, the newest iPhone AND pay rent, utilities, cable, 4 streaming subscriptions, my monthly box ‘o’ mystery crap from that hipster company (this last one is literally a 30 and under thing. Who TF pays to have a box of assorted mystery crap that companies can’t sell, so they offload in bulk, delivered every month?)… vs “I haven’t been shot or hacked with a machete today, either” or “Today is a great day! First meal I’ve had in 3 days!” My parents liked to travel. When we were old enough, they started bringing us along. It wasn’t until High School that we asked, “Hey… y’all deliberately took us to 3rd world countries first, so we could see what people didn’t have, to better appreciate what WE have, didn’t you?”. My parents smiled and said, “Of course. If we’d taken you to Australia or Germany or other developed countries first, you would have become snobs, and all you’d have seen when we went to 3rd world countries, was “Why are we here in this shithole? Can’t we have gone somewhere nice?”. We wanted you to see how a big part of the world lives. Where people don’t even have access to clean water, and bathe in drains. Where an entire family lives in a leaky house, smaller than your bedrooms. Where people work 60-70 hours a week, and make less in one month, than your pocket money for the week”. Point taken mom and dad. Point taken. |

No shit younger people aren't happy, likely for different reasons, you've got the social media/porn hypnotized, drugged out of their mind, and poisoned by the food they eat group. Then you have the crowd that realizes the former gets just as much voting power.
It's hard not to be slightly bummed about things such as the economy. |

Amazes me how many people complain about how bad it is in the US but have no clue what things are really like in the rest of the world. View Quote It is definitely worse in other places, but we should ignore these trends to our own peril. For me personally it’s frustrating getting fucked by government policies that are making my life harder than it was for those that came before me. If I were 65 retired, with a pension, with a few million invested, in my million dollar home I paid far less for, drawing social security I’d probably be less worried about what the government was doing because I could weather it much better. Unfortunately that’s not the case. The difference between me and lots of younger people is I actually realize why everything is fucked up. The government creates problems, and then convinces people to give them more power to fix said problems. If we aren’t careful younger people will give up our freedom so the government can fix the problems they created. Of course I guess if I were the person I described above I might not care about that either since I’d probably be dead before any of that actually happens. |

Economy bad and getting worse.
Housing market bad and getting worse. Education and child-care bad and getting worse. Medical industry bad and getting worse. Dipshits that came before having the "I have mine, so fuck you" attitude doesn't help. 5th gen warfare destabilizing everything around that provides any semblance of normalcy. And politics... Anything that people have to look forward to is looking grim as fuck. But no, I'm sure it's just a bunch of whiny crybaby millennials... For the record, none of those negatives apply to me. I'm very blessed, but it isn't hard to have some sympathy instead of being a dick about it. |

One fucked up thing about America is, life is made especially hard on the productive, because they not only need to support their families, but the families of the unproductive ass well.
I've said many time over the years, I wasn't unhappy with what I was paid at work - I was unhappy with what was left after I paid my taxes. By the time I paid my local, state, an federal taxes, FICA, and funded my retirement, I was taking home less than half of what I earned. The only thing that made it financially workable was the fact that I had sweetheart deal on an apartment and a live-in GF who made a good living. If we'd owned a house, or had kids, we would have had to forgo retirement savings in order to make ends meet. What a shitty choice to have to make. I'll tell you, some older folks like to crack on young people. From what I see, it's fucking tough to be young today. |
