My reading for today.

The AML series of cars are absolutely fascinating. A minuscule sized vehicle (5.5 tons for the 90mm version, 4.5 tons for the 60mm version ) that packs a 90mm gun or 60mm mortar and an engine barely bigger than the one in my corolla and half the size of the one in my 4runner.

Batteries dead.

Where it was

Where it is now.

Ran it for about 45 minutes and let it get to operating temperature. It had been sitting for a few weeks totally dead.

The only thing keeping us from the road is the brakes.

I have enough parts for almost a complete BRDM at this point.

They were supposed to finish up the shop today but they didn’t come by. Still need to install the center roof section, doors, and trim exterior panels

I love your shop.

I am only modestly concerned by the hole in the roof. I figure it probably looks worse than it is.

Daisy chained a bunch of extension cords together so now I have power in the shop.

Going to get working on some cleaning inside the BRDM. I can run the fan inside it and have kinda AC . 600 CFM fan will do that

Since I have power at the shop (aka huuuuge daisy chain of electrical cords) it’s time to paint stuff.

Starting off. Wire wheel, shop vac, and degreaser (brake cleaner).

Now cleaner, just enough for hammerite.

Now paint

Much better but could use a second coat

Hammerite smooth dark green is NOT a color match for the original paint. It’s much closer to British military green than the OD of the original Czech/Russian paint. It’s going in all the high wear areas to keep it looking nice/nicer and stop any rust spots from forming. Hammerite can be applied with a minimal of cleaning and prep and with a brush. Handy for someone with no air compressor or paint experience.

Yes, they’re just all off  at the moment while we track down the brake line blockage

Before (just wire wheeled it)

After

Exposed steel rusts quickly but this won’t now.

Cleaned and prepped

Much better and protected.

I started this morning about 10ish. Painted the front right right, back right, and 3/4 of the back left one in addition to cleaning out a lot of the little hidden areas that did nothing but collect oil, grease, and water. Ended at 2200.

I still have another day and a half of painting to do. Burned through a can and a half of hammerite today, once I order it from England it takes 2-3 weeks to get here. Need to order a bit more.

I have my bulgarian contact looking for marker flags, canvas covers, axle seals, and carbs.

Replacing, no.

Inspecting flushing and probably replacing a few parts, yes. Axle seal too.

It is so much nicer working in an actual shop instead of outside.

Operation BRDM: Revenge of the Benpire is in full swing.

In an effort to make myself more self sufficient I ordered some 11 ton jack stands. 4 of them, and a 22 ton air/hyd jack.

I will be expanding my collection in the future, these might come in handy

Uparmor the LMTV?  How is it that LMTVs are already surplus when I was driving old convertible 5 tons in the Navy in 2005?

LMTVs have been around since the early 90s. Plenty of trucks that are surplus and just old and good to get rid of.

My unit got it's first FMTVs around 1998 timeframe. TAD 6th Trans Battalion. We're the ones that supported the 88M BNCOC and ANCOC schools, as well as TOBC .

Yeah brakes have been the biggest hold up so far. The wheel cylinders wouldn't completely retract and the brake drag was bad.
