Took a transfer in my job to Alaska (Kenai Peninsula)
Been up there for work already a couple of times, really enjoyed the area and the working environment - So decided to do something a bit more permanent. But back to the task at hand: Currently bringing up a standard 5.56 AR build and a 9mm pistol. I’ve got room in my guncase for another long gun and pistol; What should I bring or buy? 870? .308 Ruger Gunsite scout? 16in PSL AK style build? Was thinking about buying a 10mm Glock 26 for day hiking/Screwing around in the woods. What 4 guns (2 long guns/2 pistols) would GD bring? |

The Galil AR/M was the only rifle to survive the Alaska State Police Cold Weather Trials, if that means anything to you
AR15/M16, HK91/93, Valmet, AK, Galil, FNC, FAL, Mini14, M14 were all entrants |

View Quote I think you mean a Glock 29 (Glock 26 is 9mm) The Glock 29 is awesome and is almost the exact size as a Glock 19. Glock 20 is standard/full size and the Glock 40 is longer slide and barrel. Or just buy a 6” barrel for a Glock 20 |

Apparently the Alaska natives habitually carry around slug guns for the big & nasties, so...

OP, have you seen the size of the Kenai bears? A 10mm will do a great job of pissing them off. I would pick another weapon for hiking with.
The Kenai is a great area, what town will you be at if you don't mind sharing? |

OP, a good handgun, 10mm, 44 mag, 454, 500S&W, and a shotgun if you don't hunt, or a 308 or bigger rifle if you do...Choice is yours, all will work, all just need the right ammo for what you are going to do... |

Those trials were tarded. Who the fuck pours 8oz of water into their rifle and lets it freeze. |

View Quote Yeah I’m leaning towards picking up some kind of 10mm before I leave (Like I mentioned in the OP) I’ve got a S&W model 29 .44 magnum but it’s kind of a family heirloom at this point and I much rather beat up a $500 glock in the woods |

Marlin 45-70
LMT MRP with 556 and 300 Barrels Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull Glock 29 |
|
.375H&H bolt gun
460 S&W revo .454 Casull lever gun 12ga pump w/slug barrel and a metric shit ton of ammo for all. |

Underwood 200 grain hardcast is my go to woods ammo..the 220 we have used will every once in a blue moon hang the slide open just out of battery..never happens on the underwood 200 stuff...You might want to stock up on underwood down there and bring it with you on the plane...underwood is hard to find up here, Alaska ammo is the only place I know of that tries to keep it in stock... 5.56 AR
9MM CCW 45/70 Guide Gun 6.5Creedmore Hunting Rifle. I'd also throw in a 454 Casull Revolver for Brown Bear. |

If you're really worried about bears bring that 870 and load slugs. Tbh I wouldn't worry about it too much, use whatever semi-auto caliber you can accurately and rapidly shoot and put Underwood hard cast or Xtreme Penetrators in it. You'll be fine.
And whatever you do listen to AKSnowRider over anybody with an east coast or midwest location for sure. |

M203 under the barrel of the AR. Use HEDP; it's only $200.00 / rd for the NFA stamp.
Short of that, a Marlin 45/70 is hard to beat. I've always liked the Remington 600/660 in .350 Rem Mag also.* I lightweight (scandium frame) S&W in .44 Mag revolver on your hip as a last resort wouldn't be bad either. You probably won't notice the recoil when you shoot a griz at point blank range right before he starts tearing large chunks of flesh and muscle from your body with his huuuuuuuuuuuge teeth. *Never lived in AK, so take my post with a grain of salt |

I would suggest that if you are moving up here try and bring as much ammo as you possibly can. Once here, gone are the days of ordering ammo online and having it shipped to your house. If flying Alaska airlines, you can bring up to 50 lbs of ammo with you per person, other airlines do not allow as much. Ship as much as you can through household goods items if possible.

If I could only take four:
1. 4" 629 or Redhawk 2. Tikka T3 Lite Stainless .30-06 3. 16" AR15 4. S&W 43C and a reloading press. |

Quoted: Nope...there is one shipper you can ship FFL stuff thru, and they only do it by the pallet..and its expensive.....Even on a group deal it ends up being as much as buying local most of the time... That's terrible. I knew things were more expensive up there because of the logistical costs, but... |
