?  Empire's better than Star Wars, honestly.  YMMV.

The Matrix was the first one I thought of, but lots of great choices.

Sarcasm towards Resident Evil & Underworld but very serious for Terminator & Alien.

I think the main difference in those who do or don’t like Aliens depends on if they view the original Alien as a horror movie or as science fiction.

I see Alien as one of the best horror movies ever made.  Anything afterwards would be a disappointment.

Alien and the thing are my 2 favorite horror movies. Agree that Aliens is not a true horror movie, but is a horror adjacent sci fi

The sequel is so bad it ruins the way you remember or rewatch the first movie.

Star Trek should have skipped the 1st movie and quit after the second

There’s 6 books written and sold in 3 volumes. All were best sellers.

One character was added to the movies that wasn’t in the books.

All 3 movies were successful and won 17 academy awards and have grossed over 3 billion dollars.

Sorry you didn’t like them though.

I see Aliens as just as action movie with a sci-fi setting.  I admittedly am not a big sci-fi fan anyway, but do like a select few.  I’ve never seen or cared to see any of Star Wars movies after Return of the Jedi, so I’m sure I’m in the minority with that.

I think it was only made to satisfy a contractual obligation. They didn’t care if it was any good.  They were just required to make it.

This.  Only ones where sequels are fine are the slapstick comedy movies like Naked Gun, Police Academy, etc.

Sequels are 99% of the time a desperate attempt to milk the success of the previous.  Recycled bits and storylines get tiresome very quickly.

Having endured sitting through part of the most recent travesty with a date, I'll throw in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The original was kind of a cult classic, #2 was bad, and #3 was outright terrible, desperately trying to find the same mojo that made the original a hit and failing hard. It was so embarrassingly awful and formulaic that we left 2/3rds of the way through.

Yeah, but sequels were inevitable.  It's like a slashed jugular... not much you can do to stop it, but you're still kinda compelled to watch in horror.

What are you going on about?  The three Lord of the Rings movies were amazing.  Even if Fellowship should have on Best Picture if we're evaluating in a vacuum.  And with the legit complaints about truncating the story, making characters comic relief, overuse of CGI, etc.

The Hobbit movies are hammered dogshit.  The movie actually melted/broke during 2, and we both said we were good, no need to come back.  Still haven't seen 3, which I understand is even worse.

Rocky and Jaws were truly cinema classics deserving of being in any top movie list.

The sequels, while "ok" in some cases, tarnished the classic status of those movies had they stood on their own.

It's already been mentioned but Anchorman 2 was bad.

Super Troopers 2 (whatever it was called) was bad.

Avatar 2 was bad and pointless.  All it did was eat up 3.5 hours and leave all the doors open for a third.

Try searching for "The Tolkien Edit" on one of the completely legal file sharing sites. Edited all 3 movies down to 4 hours, cutting out the stuff that's not in the book. Results in a little bit of weirdness, but *much* more watchable for a Tolkien fan.
