Some of you know my wife and I run a wolf and wolfdog sanctuary and rescue, not posting details/donation link (we're 501c3) until I get mod guidance, but figured I'd post some of the "kids". Attached File Last but not least, SERE, my wooly coated husky/malamute/wolf mix (only 12.5%) and Aries my entitled and judgemental pure Husky. These two aren't sanctuary animals, these are my own babies. SERE is almost 9yo now and his malamute ancestry is starting to show in his hips. He got his name because he was once feral, and at one point when I mushed I was going to name a team after all the schools I'd been to 😂 |

I just want first pick of the litter and the owner of the male can have all the rest. Eva is not bad. We can't bring her inside or take her on rides in the truck. Way too much anxiety. She loves us and our other dog. She has her limit before she walks away and starts pacing. We usually leave her so she can relax when that happens. She was a rescue from a house in the middle of memphis city subdivision. Owner couldn't take care of her or give her the time any longer. We live way out in the country and theres plenty of peace and quiet for her. She eats raw diet of rabbits and chickens that we raise. She loves the occasional fresh eggs too. |

Thank you guys, we appreciate it! Its tough work, but it really is a labor of love. WHen the wife and I got together I had been out fo the Army for a few years already, was in school working on my masters in wildlife biology, and had already started my own sanctuary. I moved here to Alabama to combine sanctuaries with her after a while. Some of these animals have had such negative experiences that it really changes them for life. Wolves and wolfdogs tend to be single event learners, where if their first experience with something is negative, they will never give it a chance again. Some, like Raven have had unmeasurable abuse. She was abused so badly by a man that she has spent the last 5 years hiding from any males that have come visit. Even most women she has been extremely wary of. My wife says I have a way with the animals because a few (like Raven) have learned that they can trust again. Some, like Hope, I am still working on and there is still no connection and there may never be. Hope wasnt abused per se, but instead neglected and lived in an 8x8 pen without ever seeing the world outside the privacy barrier. Because of this, in her mind she is still in an 8x8 pen and paces back and forth in a tiny area despite her enclosure with Guardian being significantly bigger. We are starting to see moments of lucidity from her where she will actually start to engage in play with Guardian finally, but its a long road ahead. Hope is one of the ones I feed at night so she can eat without being seen since she paces and hides from people. I cant use a headlamp, so feeding via NVGs is a thing now. I bought the wife a Sionyx Aurora so she could snap pics and vids at night of the kids, and she ends up taking pics of me feeding wearing an Ops Core and a Tanto |

We currently have 29 animals on site (including the ones I listed as personal non-rescue) with 3 more due in as soon as transport is arranged since they are all out of state. We have a friend in TX with 49 in her sanctuary, albeit with more volunteers and donations coming in. It seems like no matter what we do there still isnt enough room, and we only take in the ones that cant be taken into homes or otherwise housed for various reasons. Everyone thinks a wolf in the house sounds fun, until its not anymore

Attached File Phoenix, who I call an overgrown husky. Mostly malamute, 25% wolf. This dude is BIG. I don't know if his malamute side comes from the giant malamutes or what, but he's the size of a damn big pure wolf. This big guy was turned over to us by an animal control officer because they would have had to euthanize him, as most AC facilities don't play the wolfdog game and just put them down when they come in. He's one of my favorites due to his antics and personality. And it's damn hard to have a favorite.... |

Pretty cool OP. It reminds me of a woman I worked with back about 30 years ago who had three or four wolf hybrids. (Don't think any were full wolves but maybe one?) She had a big pen for them to be in outside and she and her husband were good with them. May have even breed a couple of them too. Don't recall now. I went over to see them once or twice and they were somewhat skittish but one of them was more used to people than the others and he was allowed out with supervision. Eventually, they had to move away back to northeastern Maine for some employment reasons and they had to get rid of two of them. She tried hard to place them with people who knew what they were doing but unfortunately that still goes south sometimes. Those two ended up going to new owners over in NE New Hampshire and within a week the Bozos thought it would be cool to let them out of their pen. They took off and went right to the neighbor's sheep and you know what happened after that. That was all about the same time the Sierra club was talking about reintroducing wolves into Maine and elsewhere in New England along with out west. Lot of shitstorm surrounding that back then. The state of NH put them both down right away and the women I knew was crushed by that outcome. |

I'm glad you guys are liking the pics and their stories, I've been hesitant to post them except the occasional sneaking a wolf or yote pic into the "post your pet" thread. They really are amazing animals and I couldn't think of anything I'd ever want to do aside from this. It gets rough at times, losing any animals is hard but losing one of these guys hits you because of the bonds you have to form with them. When it's good, it's really good, but when it's bad ... We have a few that are singles here because of their companions passing in the recent past, and those animals are still mourning. I can hear Pashka right now doing his mourning howl, occasionally added to by some others |

| That is pretty cool OP. I was stationed at Old Faithful the winter the wolves were released in Yellowstone. There ended up being a "bad boy" of a wolf that didn't get along with the rest of the wolves in the acclimation pen. They built a one acre enclosure about a mile off the road for that lone wolf. I was fortunate enough to be able to ski fresh road kill to that pen a couple times. They are sure a fascinating creature. Do yours howl? |
