It would be a cool rifle to own, but not for that much money.  I'm betting it will go for $25,000ish before it's over.

XM-3 Sniper Rifle REM S6534024

At least they know how to put a gun into a case so it is not resting on the optics.

Why do CMP auctions go so high?

It's beat up gear that's going for huge amounts of cash.

Do collectors really go for this shit?

There was like 60 rifles designed by DARPA built by IBA.  I think just about all of them went to Iraq.

It used to be pretty common 10-15 years ago when the XM-3 was developed.  I don’t know the exact reasoning, but Leupold and NF used to offer lots of optics with mil rets and MOA turrets.

It’s an extremely rare (something like a total of 60 ever made) piece of military history.  Obviously military oriented collectors would be interested.

Of course collectors go for this.

Yes, for true military gear afficianados, they are well worth the money because so few of them actually come on the market. When the DCM/CMP had M1Cs up for auction, those prices went up through the roof, at least for me, way too rich for my blood.

BUT i did score a M1D.

I understand value is up to the buyer but I couldn't tell the difference between this or a $1k Rem 700.

$10k could get you a real bad ass gun.

Company I worked for had a couple of these.  Never fired one, but the ones I held looked like they were well made and rock-solid.  Lt Col. Chandler's IBA built some good stuff but for some reason the XM3 never caught on.  Mention the owner and Marines in the community didn't seem impressed.  Hostile, even.

Functionally, it was probably a great product built with great care to very high standards, but egos loom large in procurement circles within certain realms.

Supply and demand. There are a lot of serious milsurp collectors out there, and anything even remotely modern is nearly unobtainable. So when legit recently military issued guns come up for sale it lots of people are willingly to spend a lot for it. A few years ago a batch of USMC M45 1911's came out and they now sell between $3-4K.

The XM3 was a monument to fiscal and operational stupidity.

In an era where COTS gas guns in 7.62 were doing the same job and were on contract, they went out and spent astronomical money on a warmed over Rem 700.

Lets not even look at the better 700 clone actions that have demonstrably better performance...nope...lets buy a 700 and "true" it with taps.  Then, lets ignore legions of data from BR shooters and similar on barrel tech and lets go backwards, buying a generic also ran of a barrel.  Finally, lets forget the proven chassis systems and similar that offer options like folding stocks, the ability for the user to assemble, and durability...no way we want that...let's pay 3x as much for a plastic stock from a mold with some goop in it to "bed" the action...because the 700 action we bought is nowhere near true/straight and requires bedding.

The fact that this rifle was an improvement only proves that what they already had sucked worse.

There is zero use for a 7.62 bolt gun.  Anything 7.62 can do, can be done with a gas gun.  Bolt guns should start at 6.5 or 300 win.

Serious question, were there really that many aftermarket options available around the 2005 timeframe, when this was built?

so a blueprinted Rem 700 Varmint 18" with a can, a McMillian stock and a really nice scope.

Wonder if this one saw battle or was a test rifle?

DO want
In fact, I have a 700 action I’ve been thinking about cloning into a wannabe XM-3
