To get good accuracy, 1-2.5 MOA, is spending $500 or more really needed for the barrel? Or are there less expensive decent barrels around? I k ow I’m not capable of shooting less than 3 MOA but I’m just wondering if it’s possible

White Oak Armament SPR barrel - I really like these.

Ballistic Advantage
Green Mountain - their "M49" is the SPR barrel
Centurion Arms
Precision Reflex Inc.
Compass Lake Engineering

Any of these should do.

This.

White Oak SPR barrel in mine. Last I grouped it I was .8 MOA for 5x5 groups with my hand loads. I could probably improve on that a little. Have two other WOA barrels that are sub MOA as well.

Having said that, my barrel wasn’t profiled correctly for my AEM5 per Ron and his tech drawing. Had to send it to ADCO to get the shoulder pushed back to the correct distance (2.4” vice the 2.2” it came with) so the can would thread on the required 7-8 turns.

I haven’t seen a BA barrel that was sub-MOA out of the half dozen or so I’ve helped build, using factory match ammo. But that’s a small data sample.

My prior and current Mk12’s both have Douglas barrels, but as long as it’s well made and has the contour for the brake and collar yes there are a lot of options that will shoot fine or even excellent for not a ton of money. People have already said it but White Oak comes to mind. Also BA sells a barrel that’ll consistently do a little over MOA in my experience and definitely doesn’t break the bank.

I’ve had 2 woa spr barrels.

Either I’m really unlucky or the accuracy is greatly exaggerated??

Neither would shoot under 1.5. Usually closer to 2.

My Douglas has been a consistent 1moa barrel.

My 14.5 Douglas has been astounding. Like a two inch group at 500 yards through a pvs 27 astounding.

For the money it’s hard to beat a WOA.  I’ve got a Cle Douglas and WOA on my 12’s.  Wouldn’t consider anything else.

That is not a MK12 clone barrel - wrong length.

It is also not stepped for a AEM5 suppressor collar.

That’s not asking a lot.  The pipe on my 6-8 year old BCM built Mk12 upper will do under 2.5 minutes, with 55gr bulk ammo.  With match ammo, 69-77gr, about 1-1.5, with an occasional sub-MOA group.  I don’t shoot it enough to care about loading for it.  Once I blast through this barrel, any of the listed choices will suffice, depending on prices and reviews at the time.  Lately, I’ve been shooting Ballistic Advantage barrels, and have been happy.

My data sample of one puts the BA premium line within your criteria. But again, it's a sample of one, and I got the hanson profile rather than the SPR because the sale was better

I went BA premium series. But my mk12 isn't clone correct... it's really more of a SPR that was inspired by a mk12. Shoots awesome though.

Going back aways for me.  Saw the thread title and I was like....don't I have a MK12 bbl?  Yeah...in my 3gun rifle, which I assembled to be a DMR kind of deal.  IIRC my barrel is from DPMS.  I know white oak was all the range back then (10 years now), good to see they're still going.
My rifle was a 18" barrel with rifle gas.  I put a heavy ass ff forearm on it from...Rock River, maybe?  Kind of an oval shape, and out on the end it had rails all around to attach irons and a bipod, when needed for a match that would use them.  It's a pretty accurate rig, and being nose heavy, the recoil is about on par with a 10-22.  :D

I need to get that rifle to the range.  It has been...like 5 or so years now since it's been out of the safe.

Monty at Centurion Arms is a great asset when it comes to anything MK12 and considering he is now located in the Crane area you can bet his barrels are as legit as they come.

WOA barrel is amazing for the money. When I say it shoots under a dime. It does. I forget the actual MOA.  69grain SMK

WOA.

I like clone-adjacent builds, I shoot my rifles a lot and as a result I am much less concerned with exactly matching obscure parts and more interested in results.

I liked the WOA SPR barrel so much I bought the 16” version.  They were <$200 on Black Friday again this year, I almost grabbed another just because.

Unless you like rolling dice, skip the Ballistic Advantage. I had to send two of their barrels back, the second one almost ruined my AEM5. Sent the barreled upper and suppressor to Ron, and while he fixed the suppressor, he referred me to Craddock Precision for a Criterion barrel, which I got. I also have a Douglas.

I made a rather detailed and long post here, with pics, documenting the dismal performance and return/replacement experience with BA concerning those two barrels, which was actually good.

I still have the THIRD Ballistic Advantage barrel but when they replaced the second one I requested the SS MK12 version and not the twice failed nitride version. It shoots "ok" but I've not spent much time with it.

Ammo isn't cheap, great performance makes you feel good and smile, spend good money up front. In the long run, what's an extra $200 or so above the cost of other "affordable" offerings?

I have a LaRue Stealth on my 18" SPR-ish rifle that is fantastically accurate with handloads, like 1/2 MOA if I've done my part.
