Obviously my name says it all, I fucking love Jack, love everything about it and drink it neat...for me it's an everyday whiskey and single barrel is my special occassion...
BUT with that being said, after finding this subforum a few weeks ago, my interest has been peaked and you sons of bitches have me feeling a need to broaden my horizons!!! My problem is I'm not sure where to start, unlike 95% of ARFCOM, I don't live in my mother's basement so I don't have tons of money to throw around on booze. I've compiled a list and prices in my AO of stuff I've seen you guys talking about, so let me know what's a good deal, because a good deal always tastes better!!! Or if there's any "must haves", I'd like to keep it around $50/bottle or less unless I come across a smoking deal, but at this point I'm pretty much a drunk and would never pay over $100/bottle because I drink too damn much, haha...So here's what I got: Elijah Craig Small Batch @ $24 Elijah Craig Small Batch Barrel Proof @ $75 Old Forester @ $18 Old Forseter Statesman @ $57 Old Forester 1870 @ $40 Old Forester 1897 @ $44 Old Forester 1920 @ $50 Four Roses Small Batch @ $27 Four Roses Small Batch Select @ $54 Four Roses Single Barrel @ $37 Jefferson's Reserve (very small batch) @ $46 Jefferson's (very small batch) @ $29 Michter's Small Batch @ $39 Basil Hayden's @ $31 Eagle Rare @ $32 Old Grand-Dad Bonded 100pf (1L) @ $22 1792 Small Batch @ $30 Clyde May's @ $40 E.H Taylor's Small Batch 100pf @ $50 Bookers @ $83 Just tell me if I need to go be poor somewhere else!!! |

Whiskey is so subjective, but I've never heard anyone knock RR or Blantons. I usually go with knob creak for a cheaper alternative or Evan Williams if I'm flat broke. Both of those are damn good for the price. |

Woodford Reserve.
About $37 per bottle. Don't waste it by mixing it or anything. |

Blantons man, it's the best bourbon there is. If you're looking for something cheaper and easier to find: Evan Williams...any variety Bulleit. Knob Creek. |

On your list, my go to’s are
Four roses select and basil Hayden’s. This doesn’t mean they are best on that list. Price and availability are a factor to me. |

Angels Envy is a good solid choice as well
Breckenridge is the latest one I tried and I am impressed with it. |

IMO, you can't go wrong with any of the stuff listed in the OP.
Elijah Craig is probably my favorite for the money. Michter's might be my favorite overall. Weller Special Reserve is cheap and quite delicious. |

Since your in NY. I read about their bourbon but haven’t tried it yet. The state store system here stinks so selection is very limited. I had to take a road trip today to buy a couple bottles of Buffalo Trace. |
|
I picked up a bottle of High West American Prairie Bourbon yesterday. I really like their rye, and the bourbon lives up to that. Not as typically sweet as most bourbons, which I appreciate. Great price and the bottle looks cool, too.

Quoted: I may be weird OP but the hunt looking for these hard to find bourbons is part of the fun. My two favorites are Weller and Blanton’s and I know they can be difficult to locate. With that said, Woodford Reserve is pretty easy to find at a store and is also always available at a decent restaurant if you want a pour before dinner. A great fallback easy to get Bourbon. View Quote It's crazy to me how regional the availability of Bourbon is..even the cheaper ones! A year ago I was in one of the Atlanta outskirts areas..Norcross maybe? I dunno. Anyway, I went looking for liquor stores, and I wanted a small bottle of VOB, as it's known around here. (Very Old Barton) It's a decent mixing whiskey (it's my well whiskey for mixed drinks) and has the same flavor profile (overall) as Woodford Reserve. NOBODY had it. NOBODY. I thought VOB would be like Kendall Jackson...everybody would have it, because it's cheap and doesn't suck donkey balls. Nope. In fact, the selections of Bourbon around Northeast Atlanta area were almost nonexistent. I got sort of a complex. Like....People in the deep South don't like Bourbon? Or what? All that said, I'm always surprised at what is available or NOT when I travel. I admit that I don't fully understand the distribution thing, and even as I type that, I also don't understand how "small batch Bourbon" can be in as many places as it actually IS. I wonder, given this distribution issue, whether Woodford is, in fact, available in restaurants in most places? |

Here are some not on your list which I like to keep around:
+ Eagle Rare + Knob Creek + Woodford Reserve + Buffalo Trace |

For a good starter bourbon, I always recommend four. Bulleit, Makers Mark, Woodford Reserve, and Buffalo Trace. Most of the others mentioned are great too. Just try them all. Hell, if you have a Trader Joe's nearby, their bourbon is t bad and its cheap

If you are a big Jack Daniel's fan, and enjoy the single barrel, you definitely need to pick up a Jack Single Barrel Barrel Proof. It's absolutely killer!

Of your list:
Any four roses Any Elijah Craig Eagle Rare EH Taylor |

I'm not really a fan of any Old Forester that I have tried (Statesman, 1920, Single Barrel). I get a medicinal cherry taste out of it that I just don't like. Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, Woodford Reserve, Four Roses Single Barrel, and Weller are all good and should run you $24-50. I see a lot of people saying Blanton's...It's hard to find for retail ($55-60) and not really worth much more than that. One thing to always keep in mind is that single barrel offerings are going to be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes you'll get one that blows your mind and the next barrel might taste like crap. I haven't had any Blanton's that taste like crap, but out of the 3 bottles that I've drank so far and the several singles that I've had at bars, only one of those bottles was anything special. The rest were not any better than the other bourbons I mentioned.
I enjoy hunting down hard to find bourbons but I would not start off just trying to do that. Get a few bottles of easy to find stuff first, then start trying to get the allocated bottles. |
|
I really appreciate all the feedback and opinions everyone has given here. An update into my foray:
Weller's SR - had one taste and thought it was pretty good, plan on really sampling some this upcoming weekend EH Taylor Small Batch - blew me away, this shit was GOOD...definitely impressed me and made me feel like I've been living a lie, too bad it's damn near impossible to find around here Bourbon Cream - I do enjoy Bailey's for a dessert so figured I'd give it a try...but how should I drink it? freezer chilled? refrigerator chilled? over ice? plan on picking up a bottle or two this week: leaning towards maybe Elijah Craig Small Batch, Eagle Rare, 1792...I know those are all readily available in my AO... |
