I have decided to get a new rifle and pistol both in the same caliber and since I own neither a lever gun nor a revolver that's the direction I'll be going.
I have no specific use or need for either gun, just something I have wanted for a while. I will not be doing any cowboy shoots and would not be hunting anything larger than whitetail. In all honesty neither gun will probably be used for anything other than fun at the range. What would be the best caliber to choose for this combo? I have been thinking 44 mag, have also been looking a bit at 357 mag or 45 LC. I am leaning towards a Henry Big Boy Steel X for the rifle and maybe a 629 for the pistol? Anyways, please share opinions on what you have or have handled. Any likes and dislikes would be helpful. |

Get a rifle and revolver in .357 magnum.
Has break exterior ballistics from a rifle barrel. Can shoot .38 Special if needed. |
|

.357 will be easier and cheaper to feed, and will fill your wishlist nicely.
Yes, both .44 Mag and .45 Colt can be loaded up or down, and .44 Spl fills the same role that .38 Spl fills for the .357. But the .357/.38 Spl are more fun for a long day at the range and have the capability to take the occasional deer. Yes, both the .44 Mag and .45 Colt are somewhat more capable on pigs and deer, but .357 out of a rifle barrel is perfectly adequate for occasional use. |

Im going .44, 8" 629 is plenty comfy to shoot as I am unlikely to shoot more than 100 in a day, and a .44 in a rifle is nothing.

5.56 ar15 16" Rifle
5.56 ar15 11.5" pistol Both covered multiple times. Just looking for something out of the ordinary for me. |

Well if you want good power for hunting I'd lean towards 44 mag, or 45LC if you reload. Then again 357/38 is good for cheap plinking fun.
I went with a Winchester 92 44 mag for hunting. I went with a Winchester 73 45LC for cowboy plinking fun. The model 92 has a much stronger action for powerful loads and it's lighter. The model 73 is very smooth and more enjoyable to shoot. Revolvers I went Uberti SAA 45LC and S&W 29 44 mag. Something modern I'd go 10mm. Glock 20 and Mp5 10mm. Or maybe FN 5.7 pistol and P90. |

Quoted: this was my thought too. Bonus if the lever gun is threaded, for use with cans and subsonic 38 ammo View Quote The Henry I am leaning towards is indeed threaded. I have shot 38 special subsonic out of a lever gun in the past and was impressed with how quiet it was. Supressed should be great! |

My Henry (Big boy) is heavy as hell, and too pretty to beat up in the woods.
Get a Marlin, and a Ruger. You'll be glad you did. |
|
Beretta CX4
Beretta 92/M9 You can covert the CX4 to run Beretta PX4 mags as well. 9mm would be the caliber. Did not read. My advice still stands. Be a space Cowboy. |
|
Do some research on the rifle if you go .357/.38.
Some don't seem to cycle .38spl reliably. .44mag is fun as hell out of a Big Boy. |

If it's got to be lever action and revolver, you've got a lot of options. Personally I always wanted to match an M1 Carbine and one of those Ruger Blackhawks in 30 Carbine.

I’m buying my 2 year old son a matched set like this. 357 lever Henry case hardened and then probably a gp100. I used to have one and it’s my favorite revolver to date. Still decent for 2/4 legged threats and the cowboy rifle appeals to me.
Good enough for camp site or hiking defense outside grizz territory |

I have the Rossi 357 and a smith 357.. both are fun, ammo is (was) reasonable for plinking.. if hunting was my plan though, I’d go for the 44. But for hunting I’d rather have a rifle cartridge...
I suppose the answer is... get all 4 lol |

I have a 7.5" Super Blackhawk and a CVA Hunter single shot in 44mag.
The available lever guns in 44mag had twist rates that were not compatible with the bullets I wanted to shoot. The CVA is 1 in 20", which is. So I bought a Marlin 45/70 instead. |
|
.45 Colt loaded to Ruger levels and fired from a Blackhawk and Rossi Puma is fun.

I have a .44 mag Ruger RH and a Rossi RH SBR. I like them and would choose .44 if I had to do it again. Its commonly available, relatively cheap, and adequate power for my intended uses.
I would not be happy with .357. It just doesn't make sense to me in a rifle or a larger (non-snubby) revolver. .45 Colt would work great for someone who likes to handload. I don't mind handliading, but don't always have the time. ETA: .357 might make sense if you have a kid that you want to use it. |

Vintage S&W-Pre Model 27 with a 7 1/2" barrel. Early 80's Marlin in .357 to match.

Can't be beat. Loads can be stupid hot or stupid light. If you don't reload, go with .38/.357. |

.44 mag is my vote. Big heavy bullets at low to medium velocity in rifles, revolvers and even semiauto pistols. Theres not much game on the planet that wouldn't die from 1-3 rounds of .44 mag. Lots of bullets to choose from, or cast your own.

I’ve got the Ruger Vaquero and an Uberti 1866 Yellowboy in .45 Colt. Nice combination.

Over the years I've obtained .45 Colt and .44 Mag handguns and lever guns, but for all around affordable shooting I think the .38/.357 is great. |

AR15 with a 9mm upper and a conversion block for Glock mags
Glock 35 with 357SIG and 9mm conversion barrels |

.357 will do anything you need it to do
180 gr. XTP @ 1500fps out of the rifle will drop any animal in North America 90 gr. round nose .38 will let your kids hunt squirrels |

.357 is my wheel pistol caliber of choice. I love having the option of letting newbies shoot it with softer .38 S&W.
I've considered a lever action carbine. If I ever pull the trigger on one, it will be a .357 for commonality purposes. |
|
Caliber choice isn’t going to make a damn bit of difference for finding ammo, ammo is either in stock for all calibers, or its just empty shelves, across the board.
The only shit left on shelves is 12ga, 17 Hmr, and .309 Weatherby Magic Fart rounds that nobody has rifles for. |

Beretta CX4 Carbine and Beretta 92FS/ M9 in 9mm. Share ammo and magazines.

Christmas 2016 I bought myself a Rossi 92R and a Ruger Redhawk, both in .44 Magnum. I'm happy with the both, although I just bought Steve's Gunz DVD on slicking up the 92R.

I went with .44...but man; .44 mag out of a lever was surprisingly harsh.
