Ok, maybe "quiet" isn't the best word......which flash hider or brake sends the least about of "feedback" to the person behind the trigger?
Years ago I swapped out the standard A2 flash hider on one of my 16" rifles with a Miculeck brake. It's the loudest most obnoxious brake I've ever had on a rifle. After a few mags, my jaw starts hurting....it's like it directs the concussion right back in your face. I've decided to finally swap it out for something else. I still have that original A2 flash hider....but I thought I would check and see if there was anything that might be better for a range gun. Maybe some type of "liner comp" that directs the blast away from me?? Any suggestions? |

A flash can would direct the stuff forward. I have one on my pistol and it is quieter than shooting a friend's Saint with a regular hider.

My ARs either have a flash hider mount for my suppressor or a basic A2. I’ve never seen the point of anything else.

Breaks on an AR are ridiculous.
The A2 is surprisingly good at it's job, IE suppressing the flash at night. Many of the 3 prong styles are good as well. |
|
Are you not wearing ear pro?
Because they’re not all that bad. |
|
My buddy picked up the Witt Machine SME. It’s pretty quiet for the shooter but I don’t have enough time behind it to know the ins and outs or recommend it. I’d pick one up myself if it was cheaper though.

I've been switching over to all deadair brakes on my ars. Can't run a suppressor here but they are very effective.

Before I got into suppressors I had the Precision Armament AFAB.
It's supposed to be for shorty barrel lengths but it did pretty good on a 16" You're supposed to use shims with these and not crush washers for some reason. There's good proof that it works on youtube if you search for it. It was a good balance between flash suppression and muzzle rise IMO. https://precisionarmament.com/afab-hybrid-muzzle-brake/ |

Just use the A2 flash hider. The nature of brakes is to redirect gases backward. That's what makes them loud.

OP....you said it makes your jaw hurt.
They make these soft pads with adhesive to stick on top of the stock to cushion your cheek. Let me see if I can find a picture.... . Here’s one !! Attached File . |

Once they are "quiet" they are no longer a functional brake. Do you need a brake? If not just put a thread protector on it.
I have brakes on my LR ARs to spot my own shots, and one I made on my 7.5" pistol for recoil control(no brace). I just put A1 flash hiders on other stuff, they seem quiet enough and cheap. |

DPMS Levang, if you can still find it. Very quiet. See avatar.

Of the ones I've tried, a flash can is the most quiet. But i prefer a CT Warcomp for keeping on target during rapid fire.

I've gone through several after the same thing.
Venom Viper is surprisingly not bad. It's also very reasonably priced and well made. Seriously, you'd think it would be terrible based on appearance, but relatively speaking, it's not. The Strike J comp is pretty decent as well. For comparison I started with an M4-72. |

View Quote +1 for the SureFire Warcomp It isn't any louder than an A2 bird cage, providers better muzzle rise control, and reduces flash quite a bit, especially the open tine models. Even better, it can mount SureFire cans |

Quoted: The OG three prong. View Quote Yup. Open prong flash hiders have no flat (rear facing) surfaces to reflect back at the shooter. The longer ones are also frequently the best at flash suppression. Unlike flash cans and linear comps that do little more noise-wise and virtually nothing for flash, and often weigh more than a flash hider. You can buy 3-Prong flash hiders for as little as $8. On a sporting rifle thread protectors are also a way to drop a little length and swing weight. |

Spending money on anything besides an A2 or suppressor mount is indicative of teh ghey and the stoopidz.

And furthermore, the main reason I use an A2 at all is as a stand off device against dirt or wet vehicle floorboards. If it happens to reduce the flash a little, that's nice. |

What you seek is a Strike Industries J Comp. (If you don't get a can)
Inexpensive, does 90% of what all of the expensive brakes do without nearly as much concussion. |
