They were selling lighting products at 50% of list price, or the slow guy that opened that morning only flipped half the light switches?

Their utility probably asked them to conserve some power.

They're motion activated.  They turn on as you approach the freezer doors.

OP, if its the store overhead, this isnt uncommon for them to be reduced 50% during the day when skylights provide light...  or freezer light come on as you approach....

Or they had bulbs for 50% off?!

They don't work like that. I can actually log into any Publix store in my area and turn them off and on remotely.

They are controlled by a computer and set schedules. If they need them on longer than usual I get a call to program it.

It's called daylight harvesting. Sensors tell the lighting control system that there is enough outside light coming in thru windows or skylights and to reduce the interior lights by 50%. With fluorescent, that means turning off lamps or entire fixtures. With LED, each fixture can be dimmed.

Did they also turn the AC up?

Was it warmer than usual?

Hey, Unicorn farts won't charge every EV, some need actual electricity, can't waste power on lights when EVs need charging.

When I worked at Sears, they only turned half the lights on.

Nobody wanted to see that mess anyway...

Some Wal-Marts use a lot of skylights to reduce their electricity consumption.

When the sun comes out, half of the lights in the building shut off.

Skylights get crazy loud during a hailstorm!
