I desire a short, light bolt-action. Something that weighs about as much as a short, lever action Winchester Model 92 .30-30.
Even my Marlin 1895 is too heavy. .308 or heavier. Iron sights. Suggestions? Enfield Jungle Carbine? |

Your .308 or heavier requirement doesn’t pair well with what you’re asking for. If you wanted a light, handy rifle that can do most anything .308 can do, the CZ 527 is available in 6.5 Grendle. The synthetic stocked version is threaded and comes in under 6lbs bare rifle.

Quoted: Another option: Win Model 54 with Lyman 48W. A little longer (24" barrel) but they're quite light (around the same weight as a No. 5), and have a stripper clip guide. https://i.imgur.com/TSjqhGx.jpg View Quote |

Ruger American Rifle Predator 308...has an 18" barrel and weighs 6.2lbs. Flush fit magazine, and dirt cheap, with several on Gunbroker at just over $400. |

I have often heard that the Win 94 30-30 remains popular because it is a light, handy, easy to carry rifle. I own one and I agree.
I have also used a Remington Model Seven in .308 Win for Adirondack woods hunting and hunting over 100 and 200 yard food plots for the last 25 years. It too is a light handy package. Out of curiousity I put the two up to a comparison. The results were surprising. Similarly equipped with low power scopes, the two are within 2 ounces of each other. And my 20" Seven is actually a shade shorter than my 94 30-30. Rem made the Seven with 18.5" barrel and iron sights. Its not a current manufactured item, but you can find used Rem 7 in racks everywhere... |

Ruger gunsite as already suggested or a Mossberg MVP. The latter uses AR10 mags.

Savage Hog Hunter .308
They're even generally cheap on the used market. I paid $250 for mine. Also? It's available is .338 Federal if you wanna go big.... John |

I have a Mannlicher carbine just like that. It's got a 20ish" barrel and double set triggers. Rotary magazine, chambered in .308. Weighs right at 6lbs. I shot a couple deer with it, just because I could. It's a very handy woods gun.

This factory load (Nosler AccuBond 308 Win) leaves the barrel at 2630 (SD 14). 6 lb. 3 oz. in this configuration without magazine. |

Lol some of you guys are posting 7 and 8lbs rifles.
My 16" m92 is 5lbs A M7 or an older scout rifle would be close. Or the cz 762x39 bolt. |

I had a model 7 remington in 7mm-08 long ago. It was *too* light for my preferences.
I'd personally be content to buy an old remington 700 with a stock I liked, chop the barrel to 19" or so, remove the sights, put a lightweight scope on it, and deal with the tiny extra bit of weight - which you'll appreciate at the moment you're taking a shot. |

I got the Gunsite scout in 18” and bought the synthetic stock and it is very handy. Factory Australian Outback .308 168gr smk are still clocking 2665 and very accurate. One of my favorite guns that doesn’t get the time it deserves, since I grab my 7mm mag usually.

I’m disappointed that none of the new generation of cheap “entry-level” bolt guns have provisions for a front iron sight. Just a drilled/tapped hole would add practically nothing to production cost, and allow the end user to add a front sight, and a rear peep could be added on the scope rail.

Rem 700 ADL in .308. Comes with irons. Used ones are common.

I've got the boy a Mossberg MVP scout rifle. He and I both like it a lot. Specs say 6.75 pounds

View Quote How well does that work? I've thought about doing that but never actually seem a picture. Seems like the cheekweld would be high. |

It's funny, that's the one thing I've always thought would be a great upgrade, never knew someone made them. I have a scope for this, but I love using the irons and would love them more with a longer sight radius and an aperture. |
