Today for a measly $2.00 I picked up a discarded hardback copy with mylar cover of John L. Stewart's The Forbidden Diary.  Stewart was a navigator with the 467 Bomber Group.  He kept a diary (no-no) of their missions as well as photos of the missions (bomben los!).

Read the first chapter.  One thing about WW II books if the author goes into their childhood, you get insights into the Great Depression and how they survived.  The author's father lost his job as a seltzer salesman and turned to rum running.  He made enough money to hire a maid ($1 a day or $30 a month).
