I'm a huge fan of the M60 series as my dad commanded a company of M60A1 and then A3s.

Saying that, it's lipstick on a pig at this point.

As a former 19E why not? If the USAF can fly those little dinky planes against dirt world savages why not use cheaper obsolete tanks too? They can kill just as many neanderthals as an M1 for a lot less money. Saves wear and tear on the good stuff.
Oh, sell them to our less financial secure allies too.

That's basically the point. Not all countries have the sort of military budget to always field the latest cutting edge designs. For small countries who still want to improve the capabilities of their ground forces, you might not be able to outfit battalions with brand new Abrams tanks. So if some defense contractor can come along and stuff gyrostabilization, thermals, and targeting hardware and software into whatever tanks you already have in your inventory, that's going to give you a whole lot of bang for however much buck you can spare.

It's not like uparmoring the M60 is new:

Israeli Magach 7

Egyptian upgrade

Jordanian Phoenix

Turkish M60T which was licensed from the Israelis

Might give old armor a new life at a reasonable cost. Might be a good fit for some military forces.

There are a lot of countries currently operating m60s.  A modern upgrade path makes sense.  The A3 is not really that far out of date.

There's a market for this. There's thousands of them still in service, notably with Taiwan and Egypt, among many others.

Taiwan wanted new tanks from the US, but the US won't make the transaction due to the PRC. That said, Taiwan is now looking to upgrade their M60s as much as they can, as it's their only option.

That alone is a major no-no.  concur with previous poster that if that glaringly obvious problem is addressed, such tanks would be for export only.  I don't see US using them as front-line armored vehicles.

There is no reason why the US should use that tank.

Most of the countries that would be interested in this are more concerned with thier own people not thier neighbors.

FWIK, shot traps really aren't an issue with modern AP rounds.

Modern AP rounds/penetrators tend to break and shatter on non-penetrating hits, rather than deflect.

My buddy was an Army tank commander, I'm guessing from 1981 or 1982 to 1986, I think.

He won some kind of shoot-off event where they competed against other tanks. I think Army tankers from across the US participated in it.

Would he have commanded an M60 or M1 Abrams? The contest had to be in 1982 or 1983.

Would have depended on what unit he was in, they only started to be fielded in 1980, so not all units would have had them by 1982.  Remember that converting a unit would take more than just delivering new tanks and taking away the old ones, crews would need to be trained, spare parts in place (ammunition stayed the same with the M1, the M1A1 introduced the 120mm main gun), etc...  I know the Guard still had M60A3's up until the early '90's, as did the USMC.  Heck, it was still in production in 1982...

There were NYNG (I think) M60's parked at Ft Drum in 1999 - they looked ready to go (not in the boneyard).  The story I got was they were a roundout Brigade for us (10th Mountain) in case the balloon went up in Europe.  I guess someone figured that a light infantry division wouldn't last very long in that scenario without at least some armor....I suspect all those war plans vanished with the Berlin Wall.....

We're not fighting advanced armies with robotanks.

We're fighting camel fuckers with bolt action nagants and shit.

An upgraded modernized M60 would fucking destroy their asses.

I'm down for it. Hell, make them robotic and take the people out of it.

Skynet these motherfuckers and let them be the first wave in.

Greeks, Saudis, Turkey and Tawain all have large M60 forces of 300+ tanks. There is definitely a market. I thought the music was a little too metal for a serious defense contractor however.
