What would you want to do with it?
If you buy a cheap Chinese crap unit, do you have 'mad electronics and software and fabrication skillz' so that you can upgrade it to fix the built-in flaws, or repair it when it breaks? Or else be prepared to pay a lot for a decent one.
I bought a $300-ish K40-ish cheap Chinese crap unit. I do have 'mad electronics and software and fabrication skillz'. I am planning to upgrade mine, and I am also prepared to repair it if and when something breaks.
My goal is to do "maker movement" stuff such as prototyping for some product development ideas that I am pursuing. It should do pretty much exactly what I want it to do, which is mainly marking and/or cutting of 3mm thick baltic birch plywood and various other thin materials.
If you happen to have a nearby "makerspace" community workshop, you might want to check to see if they have a laser engraver/cutter that their members can use, or whether they may teach classes, in order to help you decide whether or not it is something for you.
