From my experience as a voter and an observer of recent history in America, being an elected representative is one of the things that PUTS one above the law.
It takes some seriously egregious offenses to make one fall below that line, again.
Note that:
Congressmen molesting underage Congressional pages doesn't.
Failing to pay back taxes doesn't.
Acting as a complete sellout and trading GPS technology to the Chicoms in exchange for campaign contributions doesn't, if one is popular and can play the saxophone, and uses an aide as a humidor.
Ordering wiretaps on presidential candidates certainly doesn't.
We're still waiting on charges to be filed against FHRC.
This too shall pass.
