I remember looking at them when new. There was some regulation regarding importation that it could NOT be a truck. The rear seats had to be welded in to make it a "passenger car".
I did have a Subaru GL coupe. Early subarus tended to dissolve in salt quickly. Those that didn't had leaking head gaskets or burned a lot of oil. I had another one that burned about a quart of oil in 200 miles! |

Buddy had a Brat in college. Brat was great in Michigan Winters, and a lot of fun to cruise the back country roads after a snowfall. Never got stuck.

Back in the day, those were really cool for a brief period. Probably the only thing really working hard against them was that buying a Subaru back then wasn't viewed as a good thing....
But yeah, everyone keeps trying the idea. The Brat, the El Camino, the Ute, the Ridgeline.....

A buddy bought one in the early 90s. It had been used hard, I did some basic maint to it and drove it to him. fucker impressed me more, shithouse solid chassis feel, meh motor.First of only a few suburus I have been in . Brats were a FU to DOT long ago.I like that

All the 70s/80s mini pickups (Brat, Dodge Rampage, Chevy Luv, Datsun pickup, VW Rabbit pickup) were cool even though almost all of them rotted away into dust.

My first car was a 1981 Subaru GL 4 door sedan. I got it in 1990 but had to give it up when the clutch went less than a year later. The trunk floor was largely rusted out. The metal in the body that wasn't rusted out was quite a bit more substantial than what you'd find in a Nissan or Toyota of that vintage.
