I searched, nothing matches my symptoms.

Randomly my display will go black, that goes away after a second or two.
Play Left for Dead 2, the game is very dark. I turned brightness to max, still dark as heck.

I am using an old RX 580. My PC is 5 years old. I am already planning a new PC, is this the right time for one?

Do you have another monitor you could try?  I would rule that out before I spent any money.

No, my monitor less than a year old.

Sounds like a monitor issue, not a video card issue.

Monitors less than a year old can and do fail.

I'm going monitor too.

Sounds like a backlight issue.

Check your HDMI or DP cable too. Could be a bad cable, mayyybe.

If your card was failing, you'd see hardware issues like bad rendering or red dots all over everything.

I tested my GPU with GLmark2.

I'm not sure any of that diag information would expose failing VRAM, if it was in a good state at the time of the test.

The fact that your symptoms include brightness issues and blanking, I'd suspect a failing backlight as well, but it can't hurt to try a new cable first or a different port on the monitor and GPU (DP vs. HDMI, etc.).

I've had some games be drastically different brightness and gamma if they were full screen vs windowed, does yours have those options?

Easier troubleshooting (where you see change, the step before is the break-point)

Test new cable between video card and monitor, try HDMI if using DisplayPort or DisplayPort if trying HDMI.
Try different monitor with same cable, with different cables.

In relation to this, what version of Linux are you running?   Some distros don't support 3dfx/OpenGL as well as others?
