Hey guys,

Anyone have any experience with ISR flying?

What’s the stability / recession proof / etc of the industry?

Any PIREPS?

I did unmanned ISR for 5 years and currently do other stuff...and things.

No, the defense industry as a whole is not recession proof. I was laid off during the sequester and saw that happen to lots of other guys.

The kingair contracts don’t change hands much but it does happen.  With that type of flying most guys do it 1-3 rotations or they do it the rest of their lives.

If your former mil and have a clearance or you’re a civilian with a clearance it’s pretty easy to find a job right now if you’ve got over 1000 total time.

It's mind numbingly boring flying for the most part.  Everyone likes visiting the OGA compounds during down time because a lot of the rules don't apply there.

How do you feel about RPAs?

Lots of contractor money in drones if you are ok sitting in a booth/deploying.

Quite unstable.  Contracts get re-bid often, guys have to leave one company and go to the next with every change.  It is a mess with respect to "stability".

If you can roll with that, and with the time away from home, it is good money.

Is this a problem with all the companies, would it be stable with the big guys like L3 or Dynamc?

Much more so, I have three rotations with Dynamic(2) and MAG(1) during 2014-16, almost a year down range and 750 hours of Afghan flight time. The counter IED programs are much more hands on flying than the pure surveillance stuff. After they took our guns away from us, I did not go back.

How does one get into the IED stuff with said company?

Good news they're back.

There may be some instability with losing contracts but a handful of programs have stayed with the same groups for years. I'm green on the first deployment but now that I'm in the community I've built networks with others if the said contracts ever switch or I want to try out a different program.  The pay is great, time off will be amazing and I really enjoy the mission.
