And yes I know we have a AR section but I like the shenanigans of GD but anyway. After the XM16E1 REWELD I feel that itch coming back but this time for a A2.

Is it better to build one up or save up the scratch and try and go for a COLT?

I think military clones look the best when beat up.  So I'd buy or build one and then throw it around.

ETA: I may be mistaken but aren't you able to do either?

The FN 15 are A3 though?

Do it OP!

20" are Very Underrated these days!

They just have that perfect balance feel to them, and they shoot so smooth... its almost like the AR15 was designed to run a 20" barrel.

Eta: Nm I fucked up.

I've been looking at the Fulton's. They seem to be the only true A2 around.

A bunch of guys on are are going to recommend you A3's. Guarantee it.

Yes, especially with the nade launcher hanguards and 203 like scarface.

Honestly, if you are not buying/building every single variety, caliber and clone while prices are dirt cheap then you are just being awkward 10 ply and need to sort yourself out

Everytime we have this discussion about A2s in GD some blind motherfucker always posts that link to PSA. You're that guy tonight. Good job. That is a fucking A4. Not an A2.

ETA, I've bought an A2 upper from the EE and paired it with a Wyndham Weaponry 20" A2 kit. It is the correct spec and profile for an A2. The FSB is an A2 height. Only thing is they have M4 style feedramps which isn't a big deal and work fine with a rifle extension.

I have a couple of those stripped LMT blem A2 uppers, and I've been toying with the idea of sticking one of these barrel assemblies on one.  I'm having enough fun playing wth my A4 already to make any moves, though.

I think no collection is done without at least an A2.
My suggestion is to go milsurp A2 upper and clone lower; but if I weren't in CA would've clicked on Colt A2 buy now.

Hmmm...an A2 build might be neat in 6.5G. Now you got me thinking, OP

ETA: I have an EA A2 with a 20 in Douglass barrel, that I haven't shot in forever.

My first was the only choice available to build back in the early 80’s was the A1 style, the A2 was just starting to come out to the civilian market. Colt stuff was extremely hard to find and very limited aftermarket parts available.

This is my mostly Colt A1-2  LM upper and Colt 16” barrel and Oly lower. Not much choice then.

Do you want a legit, parts correct clone, or just an A2?

If you just want to go cheap--what I did--you can get a LMT upper at Brownells for $85.
Upper

Windham has a great barrel for $215 (M4 ramps if you care).
Barrel

And and A2 sight assembly for $40 from Delton.
Sight

You probably have most everything else just laying around. If not, the EE will have what you need.

I think Wyndham is the only one that is putting out A2 uppers with govt profile barrels and a non-F marked FSB... since, last I checked, they only use non-F marked FSBs, which is why I don't order from them for anything else.  Maybe that has changed?

Everyone needs a 20"

I would bounce if there was a bolt and charging handle included. I might order two of them.

I bought a 20" A2 off the rack. They were pretty common a decade ago.

It's still my favorite rifle.

That's the one that was made in CO around the end of the 1990s.
I have one of those (and a Colt A2 original) and it's just awesome quality. Really much same as Colt (though it does look slightly different etc.)

In other words, I would buy them all (I have already!)

I built a retro carbine with an A2 upper.

Sort of like an early carbine, with A1 style hand guards.. not historically correct, just retro gun the way I wanted really.

I love the thing, It is my favorite gun.

The A2 is my preferred AR. I had Bushmaster (Windham, Maine) build me an A2 Hbar DCM gun to my specs years ago, and cloned it on a Bushmaster (Windham) A2 Hbar XM15. That giving me my match gun, and a back up. Shooting Highpower with them, I know the A2 and feel comfortable with them.

The downside today, is that everyone is about the flattops. That makes finding a normal A2 upper a bit of a challenge. I had to pay a premium to RRA just so I could have an A2 carbine. I know they still make the 20" guns in A2, but we hate them now.

I do have a Windham 20" Gov rifle that is very nice, but I hate that it's a flattop.

Make sure you select a government barrel contour and taper pinned FSB. Otherwise you will get a heavy barrel and set screw front sight base (which aren't bad if you are target shooting).

Fulton does some nice stuff like peening the rear sight base to help keep it centered against the back of the receiver.

Put one together

- Black Creek Precision M16A2 lower
- Colt A2 grip
- USGI A2 handguards & stock from EE
- Colt or FN A2 upper from EE or Gunbroker
- Windham A2 barrel

It’s still one of the easiest clones to assemble.

My first AR. Built in the late '80s.
PWA upper & lower, Oly barrel, I don't remember the rest.
It's still a great shooter.

One of my favorite guns by far. Took me a long time to get all the parts together. Everything’s %100 surplus Colt except the lower that was custom engraved.

Build.
