This thread motivated me this morning. Just filed Form 1 for my Shockwave and a DDM4V7 pistol. If you have your photo and fingerprints (eft) on digits and know your CLEO, it took all of 10 minutes with eForms

I'm debating on submitting Form 1's for several other "pistols" I have...zero rush as they all have braces right now, but I need to figure out which are the easiest (i.e. cheapest) to modify from brace to stock.

Got the barrel from Brownells. Shotgun is 20 years old this year, pre freedom group. XS big dot epoxied over the bead, and a Surefire 340 that just works so well with the Magpul forend.

Loaded with low recoil 8 pell Hornady Tap Versa tite wad. Subsonic in the house, patterns pretty tightly, and penetrates about 15 inches into ballistic gel. 5 +1 with the Wolf +1 extension. Esstac 6 shot side saddle, which you can take or leave. Probably not needed for HD use.

Absolute riot to shoot. If I were to do it from scratch, I'd get a Mossberg shockwave, a GG&G forend, and do it pretty much the same. Look for the S version, so you can do hater tots. Totally worth it, and by far the best payload for the money.

Or, you can get a Blueline shotgun for 130, cut the Barrel 4 inches, and totally be there.  But every house should have one. I don't want to quote Clint, but true is true.
You can't change yesterday, and tomorrow isn't guaranteed. Get your head together.

All of these Remington Model 11s and FN A-5 SBS … 🤩

I remember reading a chart where they chopped a 12 gauge from 28” to 8” and measured velocity, the 18” and 12” had the same velocity due to the burn characteristics of shotgun powder.

So you are giving up nothing going from 18” to 12”.
1/2/2026 10:03:40 AM EDT
[#11]
Easiest and cheapest reliable option would be to buy a 28 inch barrel Maverick 12ga and chop the barrel/vent rib flush with the end of the tube, using the mid-bead as your new front bead. Total cost $200 or so.

Personally I bought a Shockwave, installed a stock, bought stamp, added a new front sight (shockwave bead is wayyyy off) and it’s pretty cool too. This is the only picture I have of it, top left corner

SBSing an 870 receiver would be neat. Have the option to slap a short barrel on there, but still have the capability to put a longer barrel on for bird hunting.

An early 870 should be C&R eligible, would that be legal? There's plenty out there.

I wouldn't bother with going the SBS route with a coach gun.  Having a 1" long receiver already makes them short with 18" barrels.  You also need the weight of the barrels to open/cock/eject.

Here's a side folder option https://www.kearms.com/kea-590-picatinny-stock-adapter.aspx

Anybody use one of these?

I have this on my 18" 870 and it works pretty well: https://doublestarusa.com/870rb-remington-870-receiver-block.html

With a folding adapter: https://doublestarusa.com/fsm-s-steel-folding-mechanism-with-boss-a500s-k.html

And stock: https://doublestarusa.com/ace-pic-rail-akfx-stock-s-8-5.html

They make a Mossberg version: https://doublestarusa.com/500rb-mossberg-500-receiver-block.html

By the time you tinkertoy all this stuff together it gets expensive. I'd probably go with the pic rail adapter these days.

The 870 safety isn't well suited to a pistol grip.

This.

The Mossberg top tang mounted safety is less than ideal for a pistol grip shotgun.

Hogue makes a short LOP (I think mine is 11"?) LOP that I put on my Walmart-special 870 SBS that I had made into a Shockwave 10+ years before they were a thing.
I hit myself in the mouth the first time I took the birdshead grip shooting when I eased up on my supporting grip and I only had a tight sling from front to back, not a strap on the forearm, and I immediately thought I'd knocked my teeth out.
I immediately ordered the Hogue stock upon arriving home.

Pumps are the most practical. Doubles look cool, but often make for an expensive base gun, some of them like the Stevens 311 also partially rely on barrel weight to open the action fully. Even my 30 inch barreled 311 still requires me to physically push it open the rest of the way to load/unload shells. Chopped ones make this problem even worse. Most of the newer Turkish and Brazilian guns aren’t designed like this, so if you insist on chopping a double, go that route.
