One of the ones it seems like almost everyone likes is an English former Dunhill blend now called Peterson's Nightcap. It doesn't smell good and has a decent nicotine content. Captain Black Gold is great for indoors but doesn't have much nicotine. I go through a lot of both and they don't typically need to be dried before smoking. You'll have to see which kinds you have a taste for- English, English/Balkan, Burley, Virginia/Perique, Pure Virginia, Aromatics, etc. Once you narrow that down, you can try the different ones. |

I hate all of you. Have always been curious about a pipe but always looked at it as 'old man shit'. Had a guy at the FB in Afghanistan that smoked one and it smelled so good to a point we were waiting for him to start smoking. I know zero about pipes. I dabbled in cigars but thats about it. From minor research, I know I would 100% be an aromatic tobacco guy and would go after things like maple /rum or some sort of nice vanilla notes. However, I don't want to try this and start out with the equivalent of a swisher sweet. What brands of tobacco are good to try and are quality and wont taste like Im smoking straight up chemicle? Any tips/advice when getting started as to not buy dumb shit and learn the hard way? |

You don’t have to spend that much more to get a better pipe. The bent pipes tend to collect moisture in the stems and gurgle annoyingly. The straights are at least easy to run a pipe cleaner through to remove the moisture. Buy some plain straight pipe cleaners too. Tobacco is a personal journey and there’s a fan of every blend out there. Many places sell sampler packs where you can pick some blends that seem good and buy an ounce or two of each. There are two broad categories, aromatics (which tend to be basic mild tobacco with some flavorings like vanilla or cherry added) and English/non-aromatics: these depend on the inherent qualities of the tobacco in the blend to deliver the flavor. Also get a pipe tool for a couple bucks. This has a thin leg to dig out your bowl when you’re done, plus a flat surface to tamp down the tobacco as you light and smoke. It needs to be tamped down every 5-10 minutes to keep it burning. |

I just started smoking a pipe last year, so I'm definitely still a novice, but I've completely abandoned all of the fancy rituals of preparing and drying tobacco beforehand, carefully packing it in three separate layers with different amounts of pressure, and then the very careful circular method of charring light and final light. I just stick the pipe in the pouch or jar, load it until it feels about right, light it, tamp it, and then smoke it. I also use a Clipper lighter, so generally use my lighter for a tamper, which simplifies things even further. (Fwiw, I do have a few tobaccos that must be prepped beforehand, such as plugs, cake, and twisted rope, but a pair of cigar scissors makes short work of it.) Is anyone else here as lackadaisical about how they load and light their pipe, or is it just me?  One thing I'm curious about is gurgling. I tend to predominantly smoke aromatics in bent pipes, which is supposed to be the most prone to gurgling problems, yet never seem to have this problem I hear about so frequently. I've only noticeably experienced it once that I can recall, and have had a few times where it was just hinting at gurgling but never progressed further than that. The one time I noticed it, the dottle was a goopy mess, but normally it's still dry and crumbly when I'm done smoking. Is gurgling really that much of a problem in your experience? |

I often do the same, just cram in the right amount of tobac and go for it. I think the detailed fill method gets brought up so often because it's a good way to teach novices the proper density of tobacco to ensure a consistently lit bowl. Worst case, you can't draw through it. Then just dump it out and start over. Second worst case, you have to relight more often. I'll smoke tobacco right out of the tin as soon as I pop one open, and it works, but I find it a hotter and less flavorful smoke than if the tobacco is dried out somewhat. That doesn't have to be complicated, just pop the top and let it sit out a couple hours. About half the time I get a good light right out of the gate, sometimes I have to tamp and relight to get a good even burn. If it's packed right, an uneven light can fix itself (the rest of the unlit stuff will catch). |

Having said that, what your looking for is Autumn Evening. It smells like freaking vanilla pancakes with maple syrup! My wife and kids love it. Me not so much because it doesn’t taste like it smells, but none of the aromatics do. |

Let the amount of tobacco you need to fill the pipe rest on a plate for 30 mins before packing the bowl. Packing is a bit of a pain in the ass in the beginning, gravity packing works best for me. Expect to relight a lot in the beginning. Keep at it, it’ll get so much better the more you do it. It’s hard and an art but if you keep at it the payoff is worth it. Those tobaccos are fantastic though. There are others I can recommend but those will certainly tell you if this is for you. |

If you need a pouch or plan on traveling with the pipe, these Whitluck canvas pouches are really nice for the money.   Failed To Load Product Data I actually bought their pouch and briar pipe kit years ago as my first pipe and I was surprised at how nice everything was. |

Enjoy OP, that is a beautiful pipe. My Grandfather was a pipe smoker and it is basically how I remember him. Smoking his pipe and cleaning it. I was always intrigued by the carousel pipe rack he had on his desk with various pipes when we visited. A few years back I was at a car show. Walked by an old late 60s car just like my Grandfather would drive and on the passenger side floor board was a can of his pipe tabacco and pipe in the ash tray. I stuck my head in the open window to look around and that aroma brought me right back to riding with him. It literally left a tear in my eye. I love that smell. |
