I bought a pipe, and I'm going to smoke it in the house. (Page 2 of 9)

So at least 2 hours. If you drop enough in to fill the bowl, then press it down and fill another half-bowl, press it down, that’ll usually be a good enough pack. Light the top with one match (or equivalent), tamp it lightly down, and light again with a second match. |

Inspired me to light up my Peterson as well FWIW, I remember my grandpa having a little Lazy Susan of pipes and he'd let them rest after smoking one, didn't ever smoke the same one twice in a day. Not sure if it will mess up a pipe or not, I'm a novice at best. |

So at least 2 hours. Tight is the fail. You want to pack it up to the rim a bit loose, then light it enough to make it sprout all the way across the top, be gentle with this part, then tamp the top down flat and let it sit a second. Then you light the whole flat front in the bowl and puff gently for a consistent ember. Church wardens help, so you can see the ember, but I prefer even more bent stems. And clean the f_cking things you heathens...if they get wet it's all gonna suck. |

If you like smoking a pipe, you'll wind up with a lot of them after awhile, that's just how it works. As far as packing the pipe- I usually load it up to almost overflowing and pack/tamp that down to half way or just below half-way down the bowl. Load it all the way up again and pack/tamp that down to a bout 2/3-3/4 full. Then load it up again and lightly pack that so it is almost full- a bit more full than 3/4. I light it and take a few long draws, then tamp the whole thing during a draw. At that point you might have to relight it- but then it should be good. You'll get the feel for how hard/easy a draw should be. |

If I have a bowl that goes out a bunch I will at least try to poke at it with a filter from the back. Often it's just an unlucky bit of leaf clogging the hole. If it doesn't feel loose before you light it, it's not likely to improve. |

A friend of mine and I will hit a local tobacco shop in Springfield that has a smoking lounge with nice leather cushy chairs. https://justforhim.com/catalog/index.php?main_page I started with some cigars, meh kind of boring without alcohol. Owning a couple pipes, I tried smoking a pipe. Lots of effort for little return. I noticed the smoking lounge will let anyone sit there, all day, as long as they buy a cigar or pipe tobacco. What does that mean? We were sitting their with a bunch of homeless people. |

I started pipe smoking within the last year, so take my info for what it’s worth. One of my pipes is a Savinelli churchwarden(I got it for the exact same reason as you OP), and while I do like it a lot, for a while it was one of my tougher pipes to smoke. I would end up getting it too hot because I was smoking it too fast trying to keep it lit. Gurgling is a major sign your smoking too fast, that combined with not drying the tobacco enough. Pipe smoking takes effort, which is why I like it and when you finally get it, it is awesome. I’d say it took me about 6 months to finally get it. When you no longer mainly taste burnt ash is when you’ll know you got it. My goto tobacco is Nightcap. I like a capstan blue in my churchwarden though. As a beginner I would recommend meershaum corn cob pipes. They’re cheap and much more forgiving in the beginning. It’s because of these pipes that I finally figured out how to do it correctly. Make sure to dry out the amount of tobacco you need for the pipe for about 45 mins before hand. If it’s too dry it’ll smoke fine but won’t taste as good, too wet and it won’t smoke well at all, but you’ll taste it for the puffs that stay lit. |

Most VA blends, and certainly ALL aromatics ( To fill the pipe, I've found the gravity/dribble/thirds method to be the best and most consistent... Take a pinch of your tobacco and drop/dribble it into the bowl only letting gravity do the work. Fill to the top, then tamp it down to the 1/2 mark. Repeat two more times. Gently light a "charring light", tamp down once more (it will expand), light once more, and you're good to go. Never let the pipe get so hot you can't hold it. Also, you're going to want to build up a "cake" in the bowl. Think of it like the seasoning in a cast iron pan. A good pipe with a well built up cake (ideally of your favorite blend) is a thing of glory. Easiest way to build a nice, even, cake... After each smoked bowl, you should have mostly ash but with some unsmoked tobacco in it too...they call it "dottle". Take your pipe tool, and "stir" it around to loosen it up. Then cover the bowl with your thumb or palm, and give it a gentle shake. After you dump it out, you should have a nice, clean, thin layer of ash evenly lining the bowl. I can't tell you how many janky fucked up pipes customers brought in for cleaning because they'd just jam their pipe in the jar and use their thumb to cram in as much tobacco as they could. I think the biggest reason a lot of people don't stick with the pipe is because they get into it after smoking cigars or cigarettes. They're used to a "light and forget" type situation and are turned off with the "process" of smoking a pipe. That process/ritual is VERY much a part of the enjoyment...at least for me it was. |

My brother and I don't smoke, other than the rare cigar. He's an avid gardener and has recently been experimenting with growing some tobacco plants. We were just on his new deck discussing turning his plants into cigarillos or pipe stuffing. He's threatening to buy a nice pipe like the OP. I'm personally going corn cob pipe. That or a Hobbit style clay long stem.

Very rarely ill catch a wiff of pipe smoke when im out and about. Good stuff. Makes me want to start smoking but ill wait until im in my 60's so I dont have to experience many of the long term ill effects. I wish people would smoke pipes instead of that skunk shit weed everyone smokes now. |

I have very fond memories of Grandpa smoking a pipe. Mostly the smell. It's been 30 years though and I wouldn't have the faintest idea of what he actually smoked. For someone who has never smoked a day in his life, whats a good way to learn how to? |

Generally I’ve found that the more delicious it smells, the less you’ll taste it. Since you’re smoking indoors and presumably want a pleasant room note, you might be stuck with aromatic blends for awhile. |
